Someone please educate me on how much influence classical game media (IGN,gamespot etc) still has these days compared to youtubers playing your game and clips on social media (gif unrelated)

Never read any gamereview sites to know what to play. They are often not even gamers, rife with plagiarism and payed for reviews at times. I know its more nuanced but thats how i feel

Been playing games for 30+ years.. never once looked at those sites, and wouldn't trust what they said anyway. Any new game i'm interested in I look at youtubers playing it or the steam store page.

I too have been finding myself looking at people playing the games (especially for discovering roguelikes/lites) and even discounting trailers completely, maybe this is the future of games discovery (if not already the present)

Streamers are the flavor-makers of the current era, especially vtubers. You might get a lot of eyes on a social media post, but it is unfortunately transient. Give an indie vtuber a steam key, and if its a badass product, it’ll have the right eyes on it to become a success.

I guess there was that one vtuber that got top subs on twitch a while back, maybe they're the true kingmakers

classical media has practically 0 influence. key word is "practical". the influence is there, but its not necessary. A top streamer playing your game a few hours is better marketing than any article a media site would write.

i listen to consumers not people being paid to tell me how the feel

do you ask this question to players or other game developers?

I ask because I was told to strategize in such a way that big traditional media outlets would push my content, rather than just blurting it out all on social media. made me think a bit

Honestly they still have a massive reach and readers. People might not like them but they still see their content. Getting them to push your game makes other influencers see it as well so it's a win win
