Very similar situation, the open flame on the grill side always creates its own small flame. It’s usually a pool up of fat that hits the flame directly and it starts burning the underside of the hood. In the future keep anything with a high fat content off the open flame and just on the flat top, if it ever gets that bad again just turn off all the burners, move all the food off, get some water and slowly put out the fire. Just be careful

They checked if the burning fat was landing on the gas bottle, moved the bbq so the smoke wouldn't trash the house, then started fixing up what was spilled with out panicking 🤷‍♂️

You can tell he is relatively new to grilling and every man makes mistakes. He did go for the shut off but fought with the idea over getting it away from the house. Least he did not spray water or leave the top open and getting it away from the house was smart.
