It’s indeed bizarre that many folks who like to complain about “copyright maximalism” seem more sanguine with GenAI-produced derivative content paste enjoying copyright protection than they do with works of human authorship. Giving it to the Man has become giving it to humanity.

When asked the simple question of whether AI companies will be required to license copyrighted work they want to train on in the UK (as they are required to do at the moment!), this government minister says: "Our priority is to ensure that the UK is ready for AI-related risks while supporting responsible innovation and long-term growth." If you are planning on maintaining robust copyright laws that protect creators, this is not the answer you give. This is the answer you give if you're preparing to try to justify upending the law and throwing creatives under the bus. Creatives in the UK gearing up for a big fight, I think.

AI brings up a really good point - when you're in a position to be able to provide for people, you have to be very careful about enabling them. I love taking care of people.
