They saved the skunks life. He was probably swelled up and suffocating. Skunks have unique jaw structures that allow them to slide their heads into narrow openings but make it difficult to pull them out. Once stuck, blood flow to the face increases but cannot return, causing rapid swelling that can lead to: •Suffocation: The skunk may be unable to breathe properly if the cup blocks its nose or mouth. •Tissue Injury: Prolonged entrapment can cause lacerations, abrasions, or necrosis due to pressure and lack of circulation. •Stress-Induced Trauma: Extreme panic and thrashing can cause the skunk to injure itself against the cup or surrounding objects.

Long story short had a white stray cat I fed in my garage got home late at night heard a bunch of noise no lights saw a puff of white thought cat got head stuck in auto feeder - grabbed it picked it up pulled off the container and it was a mf-ing skunk LOL nobody got sprayed that night but my life flashed before my eyes

Skunks only spray when something runs at them or they are being chased. I've seen cats walk right past a skunk. My dog has been sprayed when it tries to chase skunk but if you accidentally walk up on one and stop or back up they won't spray you or my dog. I'm sure it's instinct to turn and spray any canine running at you. It took my dog being sprayed 4 times to learn to stop chasing

Most generally they are mild mannered.

@gecffmn We cut a skunk in our live trap once and it took me talking to it trying to calm him down so my husband could pull up the gate so I can get out. It actually stopped before you went into my barn stopped and looked at me like they saying thank you
