Sondheim’s final TV appearance, September 2021. This The Late Show interview is beautiful for a few reasons. 🧵

First, @StephenAtHome’s love & respect for his guest radiates through every fiber of his being. Sondheim’s own emotion is moving too, naturally: “When I read that, I was touched… and I’m touched again.”

But equally powerful, I think, is the small but significant pause as Colbert reads his blurb aloud. That particular silence, in a studio usually so noisy, feels profound. As Colbert himself sang 10 years earlier, when he appeared in Company: “You’re always grateful.”
