The original name of the Walkman was “Soundabout” in the US, “Freestyle” in Sweden, and “Stowaway” in the UK. Sony later decided to use “Walkman” as a global brand name. The Walkman was inspired by Sony co-founder Masaru Ibuka’s desire to listen to opera on long flights. He asked for a portable device that could play cassettes without recording.
