At the age of 96 (in the video singing Panis Angelicus), Italian verismo soprano Magda Olivero still had one of opera’s most remarkable voices. She is described as the “last verismo soprano” and enjoyed one of the longest careers in the history of opera.

At age 42, around 1955, Olivero was in the prime of her career. This period marked her as a leading soprano in the verismo (realistic) opera tradition, specializing in roles that demanded both vocal prowess and dramatic skill. Her performances were celebrated for their emotional power and nuance, capturing the hearts of audiences and critics alike. During this time, she sang in some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, establishing herself as a formidable talent in the opera world. Fast forward to age 96, around 2009, and Magda Olivero's legacy had only grown. Even in her later years, she was known to give performances, albeit more sparingly. Remarkably, she continued to sing in public up until the age of 99, demonstrating an unparalleled dedication to her art and an exceptional preservation of her vocal abilities. Videos and recordings from her later years show that, while her voice inevitably changed with age, it retained much of its expressiveness and emotional impact.
