The CDC is no longer trustworthy. We know what will happen as a result of the potential change to the hepatitis B vaccine recommendation. How? Because that was the recommendation prior to 1991. That approach didn’t bring rates down enough, which led to the birth-dose recommendation in 1991. Prior to 1991, ~18K newborns/year were infected with hep B. Nowadays, it’s <20. So we’re moving backward, not forward.

When the vaccine became available in 1982 ACIP recommended the vaccine for individuals who were at risk for contracting hepatitis B due to their lifestyles or their employment. The targeted population included IV drug users, homosexual males, individuals with multiple sex partners, newborn infants of hepatitis B positive mothers and health care workers and patients exposed to blood and blood products. In 1991, ACIP recommended that all infants be injected with the first dose of hepatitis B vaccine at birth before being discharged from the hospital newborn nursery. This recommendation was also supported by the Committee on Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), despite little knowledge about the health of an individual baby's immune and neurological systems at birth. 100% increase in neonatal fever in children after hepatitis B shot. This is a big deal because all neonates with fever get a lumbar puncture, admitted to the hospital and empiric IV antibiotics. I remember being worried about this when my own kids were born.

If you, as a mother, don't have hepatitis B, then why does your baby, on the day of their birth, need the hepatitis B vaccine? There is no logical reason to give a newborn baby the hepatitis B vaccine on the day of their birth if the mother tests negative.
