It’s a terrible rule and it needs to go bye bye.

I like the idea of an alternate… But, the rule has been used in the past a few times, by each side at least once.

Eachbteam should have two backup players. I can’t imagine more than two players getting hurt and needing replacements. And it would be fun for those alternate players to be on the team!

I have seen a few similar comments here to this effect, but I'm not really sure why there's much of a question about this. In the nearly all sports, at all levels, professional or amateur, if you cannot show up you lose... Why would this situation not be a loss? Confused...

Did KB mention he didn’t like it when he was filling his envelope? Or did he asked for it changing before the week started? If he did, then fair enough. If not, sour grapes! I probably say it’s the latter!!

Didn’t hear him moan about the times the USA used this rule which HE WAS VERY AWARE OF.

@AndyPayne1978 Given that he was 5 years old in 1991 how exactly can you prove this? He may very well have seriously protested this obscure golf rule to his fellow kindergarteners while learning the alphabet.

@AndyPayne1978 A captain who doesn’t understand the rules. Ok let’s go with that tack 📌 instead. Hahahaha ouch

a) the rules are the rules. Everyone played under the rules knowing what they were. Fair game. 2) it should be changed. It doesn't make any sense to incentivize withdrawing. What other professional competition rewards points to someone that can't physically participate?

Staying healthy is a big part of the game. If you can’t play, you forfeited the point. Just like any other sport.

Rule should be the same as Solheim

It sour grapes. The rule has been executed twice before and on both occasions the USA won. Trying to see the difference this time around 🤔🤔

Definitely sour grapes, an I am disappointed it’s even being discussed by @Keegan_Bradley. The rules were written in advance and they serve a purpose when there is an unfortunate situation. Better to focus on day 1 and day 2, and figure out how to better prepare for 2027.

To me it’s a simple fix, allow each team to bring an alternate in case of injury, and it should count as a forfeit. I’m hearing 34 years ago this rule benefited the US, it was a stupid rule then and I can’t believe it never changed

There’s so many more injuries in sports and golf today and then they used to be so yes this rule needs to be changed because this is gonna keep happening.

Not possibly sour grapes because it did not change the outcome. But still: Dumbest. Rule. Ever. In no other competitive endeavor can a competitor fail to show up and yet get awareded a tie. Could Europe have ALL decided their backs were sore and won 6 points in the final?

One other thing that I think is worth noting, that I've not seen highlighted, is how rarely this happens. By my calculations there have been 276 Singles matches from 1979 onwards. This is only the fourth time it has happened. And the first in the last 180 Singles!

I don’t think it needs to be changed. It doesn’t get used very often and honestly if it comes down to losing by a half a point then the right answer is PLAY BETTER GOLF.

After everything that’s gone on and been said over the last week, I’m a little disappointed that a paper hasn’t gone with the headline “De-chambles” 😂

Make the captains play if the remaining matches do not determine an outright winner.

Sh*tty situation. The rule sucks, but what works better? I think with everything going on, and the media today, these guys are asked a thousand questions. Tough to say “Kegan what’s your opinion?” And then call him sour grapes for answering a question.

Do you not think it’s unfair on the player who has to sit out? It’s a stupid rule. Especially given how easy it would be to get a replacement.

How about no points either team. Play the day out. If there is a tie, captains pick one player each for a playoff. First to go one up wins the cup

I just cannot think of any other sport where if you forfeit you get a draw. Yes the US lost and that’s fine but regardless the rule should be changed.

Sour grapes!! 1.Players won't pull out for 'tactical' reasons! 2. It rarely happens. 3.There still needs to be etiquette and gentlemanly agreement, it's part of the game. 4.Substitute's won't work. How d'you get a 13th man into 4 ball practice sessions etc. Tears from KB.

And having said that there’s nothing wrong with leaving it, it’s in the spirit of the whole Ryder Cup. It’s just that Americans need a rule to punish these days as it’s main feature.

Both. Have an injury player on each team.

The Ryder cup has lost the spirit of sportsmanship. The removal of the envelope rule will be another step along that road. We need to get back to a more civil contest. Support your team don’t abuse your opponent

It wasn’t the deciding factor so it isn’t sour grapes. Frankly, I think the US was gifted 1/2 point. The rule should change. Have a bench player to stand in. If there is yet another injury or whatever, it’s a forfeit on the point(s). Nobody should get a point for not showing up.

Squawking about a rule after losing is not a good look. Just congratulate Donald and the Euro Team for their performance and be sincere about it. I don’t know why that’s hard, most of these guys have had a major slip away. They aren’t strangers to disappointment. That’s golf

You pull out you lose. Just like a tennis match. You’re injured, you default, the other player wins in a walkover. Not a novel concept.

The last time this rule was used was 1991 and the USA won the Ryder cup by 1/2 a point don't remember any American moaning about the rule then. Total sour grapes from KB
