🇷🇺 RUSSIA LOSES ITS ONLY MANNED SPACE LAUNCHPAD AFTER ROCKET DAMAGES SITE Russia just launched 3 astronauts to the International Space Station - and accidentally blew a hole in its space program in the process. A Soyuz rocket took off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Thursday, carrying a NASA astronaut and 2 Russian cosmonauts. The mission reached orbit safely, but the launchpad did not. Part of the structure collapsed during liftoff, forcing Russia to halt all future crewed launches from the site until repairs can be made. That’s a big deal - it’s their only launchpad for sending humans to space. Roscosmos says it has the parts and will make repairs "in the near future," but independent analysts aren’t so sure. Critical infrastructure was reportedly destroyed. This marks the first time since 1961 that Russia has no working launchpad for human spaceflight - a serious blow to its space ambitions, especially as it plans to build its own space station by 2030. The company is racing to get to space in 2027 with Haven-1, which will have room for four people. We saw its manufacturing operations, food labs, the whole Haven-1 design. It was an awesome trip! The Exploration Company just completed a major drop test of its reusable Nix space capsule, designed to carry cargo (and eventually astronauts) to low Earth orbit. The capsule was lifted by a Chinook helicopter to 9,100 feet before testing its parachute deployment sequence. Watching a future spacecraft dangling from a military helicopter is pretty cool. China is set to debut its commercial crewed spacecraft in 2028, with the first batch of 20 self-funded space tourists booking the tickets for the CYZ1 spaceship. Among them are an 85-year-old scientist, high-tech company CEOs, a female poet, and a well-known male actor. The company behind CYZ1, interstellOr, was founded in January 2023 and specializes in developing reusable manned spacecraft and operating space tourism services. In China, there are around 600 private aerospace firms like interstellOr, but they still lag behind the American counterpart SpaceX. In 2025, China carried out nearly 100 orbital launches, with only 16 handled by private companies (by contrast SpaceX was responsible for over 160 launches among 180 executed in total). The scheduled launch, however, may change the landscape of global commercial space programs. Chinese space enthusiasts are on the edge of their seats for a venture on the home-made spacecraft, and even spacewalks and moon-landings are within reach.

Europe has been shy in coming to terms with the legitimate role cooperative space plays in our security and in our geostrategic independence. It is now quite clear, however, that Europe’s space and defence autonomy has become one of our Continent’s foremost priorities. Andrius Kubilius and I have a plan for a coordinated effort to increase European space resilience from space. Our vision is long-term, structured, bold and an important step in permanently integrating security in our collective space efforts. The European Parliament and the European Commission, in collaboration with European Space Agency, organised the ‘General Assembly Defence, Space and Cybersecurity’ to promote dialogue between European and national decision-makers, and industry representatives in the context of the unprecedented geopolitical challenges that the European Union is facing.
