NEWS: SpaceX has detailed Starmind, its plan for up to 1 million AI compute satellites in orbit, on a new website. Starmind moves AI data centers into space. Each satellite runs AI compute in orbit and beams results to Earth through Starlink lasers. The satellites draw constant solar power and cool for free in the vacuum. SpaceX filed that plan with the FCC in January. The first satellite, AI1, carries 150 kW of peak compute and spans 70 meters. Starship will carry 30 to 50 AI1 satellites per launch. SpaceX will build them at a new Gigasat factory in Bastrop, Texas. The AI chips come from a planned SpaceX and Tesla fab called Terafab. Two prototypes target early 2027, with thousands of satellites from late 2027.

We're also learning more about Elon Musk's plans for the moon, for solar powered data centers in Space, and for Mars, and you'll see a lot of what we expect for the next 20 to 25 years in our open source SpaceX model that came out around mid year and caused quite a stir. Why are many in the space community calling SpaceX Starship Flight 11 the Flight of many “Lasts”? That’s because it is true and represents a major transition from the more Wild Wild West of prototype development to a more operational, maturing space launch and spacecraft system. After Flight 11, much of the original orbital launch site systems, from the launch mount, to the water deluge & supporting systems are about to be replaced by a brand-new & much more reliable, survivable & rapidly reusable system. Thursday, March 14th, 2024 #S28 and #B10 took to the skies for #Starship Flight 3. Building on the success of Flight 2, B10 completed its boostback burn making it the first #SuperHeavy booster to make a touchdown in the Gulf of Mexico. S28 completed its insertion burn making it the first Starship to reach the reentry portion of flight providing massive amounts of data for #SpaceX engineers. Both B10 and S28 provided amazing views and reached new milestones making Flight 3 the most successful orbital test of Starship to date. Congratulations SpaceX! We look forward to Flight 4, which could be right around the corner!

Starlink just dropped major updates on space safety admitting orbital congestion is a legit problem as they build the biggest satellite constellation ever. They’re lowering thousands of sats to lower altitudes in 2026 for faster deorbiting + lower collision risk, and rolling out their new Stargaze system to share real time avoidance data with everyone for free. The company causing most of the traffic is now warning about the jam, and trying to fix it. Interesting times in orbit.

The California Coastal Commission has already made up its mind that it would deny SpaceX a coastal development permit (CDP) if SpaceX applies for one – It is a foregone conclusion. The problem for the Commission is that the US Space Force has already agreed to ALL of the Commission's demands regarding environmental safeguards and monitoring at Vandenberg for the increased number of SpaceX launches. Now, the Commission realizes that if it votes in favor of the consistency certification of the US Space Force, it would be impossible to then find a plausible environmental reason to deny SpaceX a CDP that's based on the exact same parameters as the US Space Force's consistency certification. This is an overt act of political bias by the Commission against Elon Musk and SpaceX. This is why SpaceX has filed a federal lawsuit against the Commission to seek an order that would bar the Commission from regulating its rocket launch program at Vandenberg. This is important because the Commission will try to force SpaceX to apply for a CDP via enforcement action – An application for a CDP that the Commission has no intention whatsoever of granting.
