A rocket damaged the only launch pad at Baikonur. The launch of the Soyuz 2.1a rocket carrying the Soyuz MS 28 spacecraft proceeded smoothly. The crew entered orbit and successfully docked with the ISS. However, damage to launch pad components was discovered on the pad. The lower retractable service cabin failed to retract into its protective niche and fell into the gas chute. Roscosmos stated that spare parts are available and repairs will begin quickly. If sufficient components are available, repairs could take approximately six months. This poses a problem because this pad at Baikonur is currently the only one capable of launching manned and cargo Soyuz spacecraft to the ISS. The launch of Progress MS 33 is scheduled for December 21, 2025, and another Soyuz is planned for next year. Meanwhile, Vostochny is not yet ready, Plesetsk is not in the trajectory, and Baikonur Pad 1 is mothballed.
