SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell just revealed the enormous scale of Starlink: “As of June 30th, our constellation of operational Starlink broadband and mobile satellites in orbit grew to roughly 10,200, with our 9,600 broadband satellites delivering roughly 800 terabits per second of total downlink capacity Following a successful speed-run test of the V3 Starlink satellites on the most recent Starship launch...during which we connected every satellite through every laser link.....we intend to deploy V3 satellites into the constellation for operational use on the upcoming Starship missions”

Today, SpaceX successfully deployed 20 actual Starlink V3 satellites for the first time ever. Starship V3 can hold up to 60 of these satellites. Each Starlink V3 satellite offers 1 Tbps of downlink capacity, so a single Starship launch can add up to 60 Tbps of total downlink capacity to the network which is more than 20x what a Falcon 9 delivers today with V2 satellites. Insane scale. V3 will also enable 5G high-bandwidth direct-to-cell connectivity anywhere in the world. After deployment, SpaceX successfully made contact with all 20 Satellites! Successful day.

Each satellite runs AI compute in orbit and beams results to Earth through Starlink lasers. The satellites draw constant solar power and cool for free in the vacuum. SpaceX filed that plan with the FCC in January. The first satellite, AI1, carries 150 kW of peak compute and spans 70 meters. Starship will carry 30 to 50 AI1 satellites per launch. SpaceX will build them at a new Gigasat factory in Bastrop, Texas. The AI chips come from a planned SpaceX and Tesla fab called Terafab. Two prototypes target early 2027, with thousands of satellites from late 2027.

The orbits are so low (480 km to 550 km) that even if SpaceX were to lose control of one, the small satellites will run out of fuel within 5 years. Then they get dragged back into the atmosphere and burn up. Every satellite is in a lane to avoid other Starlink satellites. They all are connected to a collusion avoidance system and can make small course adjustments if needed. Starlink can provide high speed internet anywhere on the planet without having to bury expensive fiber cables underground or undersea. All you need is a small dish which scans the sky for the closest satellite to provide internet connectivity.
