Since Stanley Kubrick had saved money by shooting his documentary shorts without sound and adding the soundtrack afterward, he tried the same method with his first feature film, 'Fear and Desire' (1952). However, because post-synchronizing a soundtrack for a feature film is more complex than dubbing sound for a short subject, Kubrick ran into problems that added to the $9,000 already spent on shooting the picture. As a result, 'Fear and Desire' never earned back its initial investment though independent distributor Joseph Burstyn was able to book the film on the art-house circuit, where it garnered good reviews. When 'Fear and Desire' was previewed in Los Angeles, Kubrick got some negative feedback from members of the audience who thought Mazursky’s performance of In was overwrought. A member of the film’s crew who was present recalled that Kubrick wept when some moviegoers had tittered at Mazursky’s performance during the film. That only showed, he explained, how much Kubrick cared about his movies. Nevertheless, the film got some positive reviews. More than one critic singled out some scenes, such as the one in which an enemy general is shot, as visually compelling. Spartacus is Stanley Kubrick’s fifth feature film & one of his best. As the years have gone by, I feel like this film isn’t mentioned enough as a top-tier Kubrick film, it just feels a little forgotten relative to films like Eyes Wide Shut (which has transformed into a cult classic over the last few decades), 2001: A Space Odyssey, or even Barry Lyndon. This movie also reunited Kubrick with Kirk Douglas just a few years after Paths of Glory. I think I prefer Spartacus to Paths of Glory by the slightest of margins.
