This anti-desertification technology, known as the "straw checkerboard sand barrier," originated in China and has since spread throughout the world. In 2023, I met Tang Xining, a 57-year-old scientist who has been fighting desertification in Ningxia for more than 30 years. He is the third-generation Chinese scientist to employ the "straw checkerboard sand barrier". More than 487 square kilometers of land have been spared from desertification because to his efforts. He has modernized the method using machines and other cutting-edge technology, earning five patents. The original "straw checkerboard sand barrier" only kept 25% of the desert's grass alive, whereas the new technique keeps almost 75% of the plants thriving. He showed me how to make a "straw checkerboard sand barrier" the old-fashioned way. The straw checkerboard sand barriers were originally created for building the desert section of the Baotou-Lanzhou Railway. Researchers discovered that straws arranged in a checkerboard pattern on the desert floor can effectively control the movement of sand dunes. In 1955, the Chinese Academy of Sciences established China’s first comprehensive observation station in Shapotou; and then the following year, the country’s first specialized sand-break forest was launched. After numerous failures and explorations, straw checkerboard sand barriers were adopted as the main method to deal with moving sand when the railway opened. The method was applauded by experts from both home and abroad at the United Nations Conference on Desertification (UNCOD) in Nairobi in 1977. Since then, foreign experts and personnel came one after another to Shapotou to learn the unique method. Irreplaceable Physical Assets "One which most people don't look at—most investors don't really look at, interestingly—is irreplaceable physical assets. We're in a world where people just look at earnings. They don't look at asset value or physical assets. So we like quite a bit of infrastructure. Airports, for example, one of our investments has been the airport group in Spain that the government privatized, AENA. You can never build a second airport in Madrid or anywhere else. These are natural monopolies. That also applies to toll roads, railroads, and telecom towers." 2. The Invisible Glass Experiment Scientists once conducted a fascinating experiment with a pike and an aquarium. They placed a transparent glass barrier in the middle of the tank. On one side was a large, hungry pike. On the other side swam several small fish. As soon as the pike spotted the smaller fish, it launched itself forward to attack. Bang! It crashed headfirst into the invisible glass and was thrown backward. Undeterred, the pike tried again... and again. Each attempt ended the same way a painful collision. After repeated failures , its head became bruised and some of its scales were knocked loose. Eventually, the pike gave up. It retreated to a corner of the tank, clearly frightened and defeated. Then, the scientists quietly removed the glass barrier. The small fish now swam freely around the entire aquarium some even passing right in front of the pike’s mouth. But the pike never attacked again. Even though it was starving, it refused to strike. In its mind, the invisible wall was still there. A few days later, the pike died of starvation surrounded by abundant food it could no longer bring itself to eat. This phenomenon is known as the Pike Effect (or Pike Syndrome). Texas A&M HC Mike Elko - Building Defensive IQ for Winning Situational Football "It starts to me with you have to develop football 101 in your defense. You've got to take a step back & you've got to build some level of general football knowledge in your defensive unit. It's sometimes the things that can save you when you don't call the perfect defense/scheme. Down & Distance Understanding... 2nd & 7+ - We have won 1st down... The offense is now trying to get themselves back in favorable positions for 3rd down. Here the battle is for half the yardage. - Offensively you will see a lot of RPOs, Quick Game, Screen & Draw. This is not a down where you will see a lot of high risk types of offensive plays. - Defensively we play this down & distance like a 3rd down off 1/2 the yardage... (2nd & 8 is like 3rd & 4, 2nd & 14 is like 3rd & 7) 2nd & 4-6 - We have lost 1st down. Now we must make a play on 2nd down to try to re-create an advantage for 3rd down. Success on this down is similar to 1st & 10. We are looking to hold them to 3 or less. - This is a down where the offense usually sticks to their strengths. Again, they are looking for a low risk play that will keep the chains moving forward. - For us we call this D&D no different than 1st down. 2nd & 1-3 (Waste) - Thus for the offense is known as a waste down. This is a D&D where the offense is likely to take a deep shot because they are in a favorable position for 3rd down. - Offenses will try double moves & max protection shot plays a lot on this D&D - For us on defense, this is a big zone pressure down. Gives us a chance to create a negative play and regain the advantage on the sticks. Also closes the middle of the field to protect us on the shot plays.

Two things I'm hoping they fix in #NBA2K27. 1) Invisible barriers You can see how I stun LaMelo with the jab, but when I try to blow by I hit a barrier and LaMelo ends up back in guarding position. Kind of defeats the purpose of the jab game. Probably could play through that ride animation and still have an advantage, but the barriers make things feel unnatural at times. 2) These canned defensive animations that grant way too much mercy to trailing defenders. Been talking about this for years. You'll have a guy beat on a drive, initiate a dunk or layup, and then 2K will just unnaturally force you into an animation that kills your forward momentum and makes you do some floater or layup to allow a stop from the trailing defender. You can't rationalize it...because it isn't a bad take (even though 2K will say it is after the fact) so why is an advantage I created being taken out of my control? Sometime they'll even just let the AI zoom to you and foul you so you don't get a layup. It just doesn't feel natural and that's my problem with it. There are even times on fast breaks where you get a steal, and you're trying to run out...but there's a dude who's literally behind you holding you in a ride animation preventing you from picking up speed. Just too much mercy for beat defenders in my opinion. Should you be forced into bad animations after beating a defender and attempting to score? I just don't know if that makes sense. It makes it look like you did something wrong, but it's really out of your control. #NBA2K26
