For 10 months, CPS has ignored discussing progressive solutions for school funding. Yesterday, we presented a side letter with 25 revenue ideas — from taxing data centers to closing corporate loopholes. CPS? They had just ONE idea for new funding, and it was funding that was already allocated to CPS for this year. Our students deserve libraries, smaller class sizes, and fully funded schools—but CEO Martinez refuses to embrace real solutions. We are not the obstacle to progress—we are guiding the way toward real solutions.

Aspira’s leadership says it is insolvent with no clear plan to keep its schools open through the end of the year. 570 students and their educators should not pay the price for Aspira’s financial mismanagement. Public dollars demand public accountability. If charter operators control millions in funding and valuable assets, they must use every tool available to protect students , not pass the crisis onto CPS and taxpayers, and abandon their student mid-year. CTU is demanding immediate emergency planning to ensure continuity and stability for Aspira families. Our students deserve better than chaos.

🚨Is the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors about to DEFUND school resource officers to fund more DEI? At a March 2nd meeting, Supervisor Juli Briskman told the county’s DEI department that she hopes the board will not fund a large resource request (elementary SROs), and if that happens, other budget requests like more DEI positions could be funded. The County Administrator already included funding in the proposed budget to fund school resource officers in elementary schools, something Briskman opposes as do most Democrats on the school board like April Chandler and Anne Donohue. On Thursday at 5:15 pm, the Loudoun County School Board is holding a special meeting and is expected to vote on the Sheriff’s proposal to add school resource officers in all elementary schools. Right now, the Democrat majority on the school board is expected to formally oppose the SRO proposal. We’ll keep you updated. Some believe this is being done now so Democrats on the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors, like Briskman, can make the argument to take the SRO funding out of the county’s proposed budget. “Why fund elementary school SROs if the school board doesn’t want them?” Right now, there are school resource officers in all middle and high schools in Loudoun County. The Sheriff says the county needs school resource officers in elementary schools because of how many calls of service there are at elementary schools and he says SRO’s can protect the most vulnerable kids in the county when seconds count. Elementary school shootings have been on the rise over the past ten years. The sheriff’s office also tells me there are hundreds of instances where SROs have had to leave middle schools to respond to threats at elementary schools each year. The sheriff’s office was told by the school admin last year that if they want school resource officers in elementary schools, they should get the funding first, and then LCPS will talk. But now it appears the school board is moving the goal posts. The sheriff’s office was able to get the funding, but now there’s an effort underway by Briskman and some school board members to pull the funding and prevent school resource officers in elementary schools.

You can imagine Ryan Bridge's eyes rolling as he listens to this school board chair explain why her school is refusing to make govt requested changes to the teaching curriculum. The speaker Ms Kate Keddell is Chair of Queens School board (Dunedin) and she says the govt is wrong to ask schools to cut references to the Treaty of Waitangi. She knows all the buzzwords- diversity, inclusion, blah blah blah but doesn't know critical items like attendance rates or achievement results. Around 200 govt schools out of 2000 have made public statements reiterating their commitment to the Treaty. Kate said the Treaty was fundamental for schools in an inclusive society. "What it means for us is that when we are making decisions, we look at them through a lens of equity and cultural responsiveness and inclusion," she said. The government has said the Treaty is an obligation for the Crown, not schools. It said schools should be focused on ensuring high achievement for all students, not on figuring out how to give effect to the Treaty.

The Trump administration’s move mainly affected the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the independent nonprofit organization that distributed federal funds to PBS, NPR, public media programming and more than 1,500 local stations. The corporation’s board voted earlier this year to dissolve itself after Congress voted last summer, at Trump’s request, to claw back about $1.1 billion of previously approved federal funding for public broadcasting. While the rescission of federal funding and the dissolution of the CPB resulted in layoffs, programming cancellations and operational changes at stations across the country, PBS and NPR continue to air news, arts and other programming on television, radio and online platforms.
