Once in Tokyo, I was at a bar drinking with an American friend. We wanted to get the bill. I couldnt remember the Japanese word for bill, and so i said "ビールをください" We got 2 more beers. Oops

CLASSIC

Brb, watch me get arrested

taking a spin on the "hope this is a katakana word" gacha

Yeah, there are many english words, that were transfered to japanese language, but changed a bit for japanese people pronunciation. I do know just a bit of japanese from anime and when i was in Japan (7 and 9 years ago), i was able to ask, how to get to the train station. Ask if i can take a photo of an owl, that a girl on a street had (she was promoting an owl cafe), ot tell to a station staff, that i lost my phone (forgot it on a ticket dispenser, go withouth it 2 train stations and then found out i dont have it and come back) and ask if they didnt found it (they did). Japanese people love, when a gaijin speaks japanese, even if only a bit and is polite. Though by now, there are many good apps, that will translate for you spoken language in real time from japanese to english and vice versa (you can play it to them). That can help as well.

I asked where the ‘tsukemono’ was. They asked me what vegetable and I said ‘kyuuri’ and they were like ‘ah pikurus? Kochi e’

Ninniku = Human Meat

Guess all the anime with American characters really did speak the right way

Yep, basically full send the accent in general.

True, I was deployed to Iwakuni for like 9 months, and most people there spoke a little english, at least enough to communicate.

Makes sense that most Japanese people probably encounter English loanwords written in katakana or otherwise spoken in a Japanese accent. They're probably more likely to recognize the word "banira" than "vanilla".

Japanese has a LOT of English loanwords as far as I understand - the one I remember is beer = beeru

Woah pia your pickle is huge
