Typical Nigerian stories. Many of them go abroad and end up on the lowest labour line: minimum wage jobs, stewards, cleaners, warehouse workers, etc. Again, if you compare the life of that cleaner to a cleaner in Nigeria, it’s not the same thing. As a cleaner in the abroad, you can buy a car, you can sponsor holiday trips to Paris, Rome, Greece, etc. How many cleaners in Nigeria can afford to travel from Lagos to Ibadan for holiday? The problem with many Nigerians like this is, Nigeria didn’t prepare them for life abroad. You will not find any Chinese man in these minimum wage warehouse jobs. They work in Google and they own big businesses. Life abroad is still a reflection of who you are as a person. If you fail to upscale your skills, your communication ability, your business acumen, your knowledge about finance, money, investments, or even show business, you will end up in retail jobs, and these jobs, by the abroad standard, aren’t meant to make anybody rich. They are for the lowest skilled people to survive on. The problem with Nigerians and most Africans again, is that they do these minimum wage jobs and still want to build mansions at home. Their colleagues who are from the country they work in work, save up, rent a house or take a mortgage on an apartment, go on holidays once or twice a year, and when they’re old, they die and let others live. Nigerians want to live for themselves and their entire village at the same time. It is not the problem of the abroad; it is you who carries unnecessary baggage on your head as a black African man. The part he got right though is the marriage. Many African girls abroad are single and searching. They are sort of stuck between identifying as a conventional “African conservative wife” and being fully liberal “oyibo woman”. Plus the fact that African men are always working like horses and camels and hardly ever have time to date. So the message, whether abroad or Nigeria, remains the same. Upgrade yourself. Read. Broaden your horizon. Take key courses that add value to your skills. Don’t remain at the lowest end of the food chain and come online to shout “abroad hard, abroad hard”. I used to know a Nigerian guy who worked with Google as a programmer and earned over $450,000 annually after tax. And that is low. Some guys in finance earn a million or more annually. You can’t be the guy who clean up after such people and expect same results. There are too many agberos in this abroad now shouting “abroad hard”. People who don’t know how to cross legs and drink tea!

Abroad is only hard if you don’t have anyone to coach or guide you. I live here; I’m 40 with three kids. Two attend private Christian school, and one is watched at home. Being a hindrance or roadblock to people is like dictating or projecting your life onto someone else. Our journeys are totally different.

Why don’t you talk about people who have made it abroad? Why only talking about people struggling?
