Jesus was mocked, spat on, and crowned with thorns, which was pressed into his scalp (Matthew 27:29–30). The thorns caused intense pain and further bleeding. Soldiers also struck him, adding to his trauma. By the time crucifixion began, victims like Jesus were often near collapse from blood loss, dehydration, and exhaustion. Victims were typically forced to carry the crossbeam (patibulum), weighing 34–57 kg (75–125 lbs), to the execution site. Jesus carried his crossbeam from the Praetorium (likely the Antonia Fortress or Herod’s Palace) toward Golgotha, a distance of about 600–900 meters (0.6–0.9 km) along the Via Dolorosa (John 19:17). Simon of Cyrene was conscripted to help when Jesus faltered (Luke 23:26), suggesting extreme weakness. The crossbeam was tied or strapped to the victim’s shoulders, exacerbating pain from scourging wounds. Jesus was crucified at Golgotha (“Place of the Skull”), outside Jerusalem’s walls (John 19:17). Victims were often stripped naked or left with minimal clothing (Jesus’ garments were divided, John 19:23–24), adding humiliation. Jesus was laid on the ground or directly onto the crossbeam. The cross could be a T-shape (most likely for Jesus, based on Roman practice) or a traditional †-shape. The victim’s arms were stretched across the crossbeam and typically nailed through the wrists (not palms, as wrist bones could support body weight). Iron spikes, about 13–18 cm long, were driven through the wrists into the wood, severing or compressing nerves (e.g., the median nerve), causing excruciating pain. The feet were nailed or tied. In Jesus’ case, nails are implied (Luke 24:39). The feet were often positioned with knees bent, one foot over the other, nailed through the heels or arches into the upright pole or a small footrest (sedile). The crossbeam was hoisted onto the upright pole, either by ropes or by fitting it into a notch. The victim was lifted into place, causing intense pain as the body’s weight pulled against the nails. The cross was dropped into a hole or secured, jarring the victim’s wounds. Jesus’ cross likely stood 2–3 meters high, low enough for interaction (e.g., with those at the foot of the cross, John 19:26–27). Jesus’ crucifixion was a savage butchery. A whip studded with bone and metal flayed his back to a bloody pulp, veins spurting, shock gripping his heart. Thorns stabbed his scalp, blood streaming down his face, nerves howling. Battered and drained, he staggered under a 50-kg crossbeam, collapsing in agony. Iron spikes ripped through wrists and feet, shredding nerves, every twitch a lightning bolt of torment. Hoisted high, his chest caved, lungs clawing for air; he shoved against nailed feet, flesh tearing on jagged wood. Blood oozed, pulse faded, thirst choked his swollen tongue. In 3–6 hours, he suffocated, body broken. A spear plunged deep, unleashing a geyser of blood and water—his heart burst, lungs drowned. A grotesque, shuddering end. This happened ~ 2000 years ago to the only man that walked on Earth and had no sin or hate. His love gives joy, peace, healing, restoration, strength, courage, hope, purpose, meaning, and life. He was, is and will be the purest act of love humanity ever witnessed. Every time you deny Him you spit on him dying on that cross. #ChristIsKing of Kings .
