HISTORIC FLOODING IN ANDERSON, INDIANA. The White River is now at 24.93 feet, surpassing the previous record crest of 23.6 feet set during the Great Flood of 1913. Major flood stage is 19 feet here. At 24 feet, a record flood is in progress. This is historic, catastrophic flooding unfolding across Anderson and other communities in Indiana. And now, two different flood disasters are happening at the same time: record river flooding from days of runoff, while additional heavy rain is producing flash flooding across parts of central Indiana. River flooding is the slow-moving disaster, rising inch by inch and swallowing neighborhoods. Flash flooding can happen in minutes. Anderson is dealing with both. Motorhomes, RVs and vehicles remain surrounded by floodwater, even after the river has dropped several feet from its historic crest. The White River at Anderson reached a record 24.9 feet, surpassing the previous record from the catastrophic flood of 1913. As of 4:30 p.m. Friday, the river had fallen to 22.3 feet, but remains in MAJOR FLOOD STAGE. For perspective, major flood stage is 19 feet and flood stage is just 10 feet. That means what you see here isn’t over. The water may be slowly retreating, but there is still a very long way to go. The National Weather Service says the White River at Anderson isn’t expected to fall below flood stage until late Tuesday evening. This is the aftermath of a historic flood, one that rewrote a record that stood for more than a century.
