OFW Zero Remittance Week: A ludicrous act of self-sabotage. The sheer idiocy of this so-called “OFW Zero Remittance Week” is beyond comprehension. A small group of overseas Filipino workers, who toil in foreign lands to support their families and contribute to the nation’s economy, have somehow convinced themselves that withholding hard-earned remittances will be an effective protest—against what? Against accountability? Against justice? Against the legal pursuit of Rodrigo Duterte, a man facing charges for the most despicable crimes against humanity? Let’s get this straight: these OFWs are not just politicising their group; they are actively harming their own families in a pathetic attempt to shield a man who presided over the mass slaughter of poor Filipinos under the guise of a drug war. They claim to be patriotic, yet their loyalty is not to the Philippines, nor to their loved ones who rely on their financial support—it is to a disgraced ex-President now under international scrutiny. The irony is nauseating. The Duterte administration did not create the economic conditions that allowed these workers to prosper abroad; in fact, under his regime, the peso weakened, inflation soared, and job opportunities in the Philippines remained dismal. Now, these brainwashed sycophants are willing to inflict financial hardship upon their own families just to make a symbolic stand for a man who, in all likelihood, does not even know they exist. What exactly do they hope to achieve? The Philippine economy will not crumble because a fraction of OFWs refuse to send money for a week. If anything, the only real victims of this asinine stunt are their own parents, spouses, and children, who will have to tighten their belts because of their misguided political worship. Meanwhile, Duterte—who has built his career on exploiting blind loyalty—will not be moved by their sacrifice. He will sit comfortably, knowing that he has yet again tricked people into defending the indefensible. It is one thing to have political beliefs; it is another to throw one’s dignity, common sense, and familial duty into the gutter for the sake of a man who left a bloodstained legacy. This is not heroism. This is not nationalism. This is an embarrassing display of servitude to a failed strongman and a murderer who has turned his supporters into pawns in his desperate bid to escape justice.
