Whilst not downplaying the immense influence of Jerome’s translation on Western biblical tradition, there are many older biblical texts. Be there in Syriac, Aramaic, Ethiopic, Aramean etc. The Greek Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Bible itself was available when Jesus walked the earth. Indeed, it was the discovery of much earlier biblical manuscripts (which would not have been known or available to Jerome at the time) that prompted the revision of translations and the multiple disciplines of biblical textual criticism, which sought to determine the most authentic text from amongst very many which (having been copied by hand before the printing press became available) differed in slight (largely insignificant) ways. It’s somewhat of an overstatement to claim the vulgate as the “grandfather of every Bible on earth”

Like nearly all similar claims for ancient history in Israel there is absolutely no corroborating or archeological evidence for this being the actual place St Jerome lived in Bethlehem. Need to be careful about fully endorsing such sites and claims!

We actually have the Vulgate transcription that he wrote there, So that’s a pretty glaring clue that it happened.
