Logic dictates that something—or someone—always had to exist. Assume it was a “someone,” not a “something.” Why would such a being create a world like ours, one filled with pain? The Advent of Time provides a definitive answer.

Joel Spolsky’s insights highlight the strategic power of the freemium model—build massive user adoption through free access and monetize the high-value users who can’t live without the product. This approach not only democratizes access but also creates a self-sustaining business model. By making Copilot free, he could have built a broader user base, eventually targeting enterprise-level customers with premium features.

That is all great in theory, but it also misses how many of these products are created that: - Focus on purely getting huge not paying customer base - Uses that customer base to look for a buyer for a ridiculous amount of money - New owner tries to figure out how to monetize which starts breaking the product - Product is shutdown and users get left stranded

"The End Of Free" blog lost its domain (c.2006) but the blog posts including of Ev Williams can still be found here on blogspot and on the WaybackMachine. Enjoy.

Great find -- thank you!
