Stanley Druckenmiller: “You need to be intellectually curious, really really open-minded, & you need to have courage. And when I say courage, you need the courage to bet big & bet concentrated, but also the courage to fight your own emotions.”

The full interview:

Every terrible entry and exit I've made felt sensible at the time. That's what makes emotion the hardest position to fight.

Being natural curious is such a driver to becoming better at things across all areas of your life. I completely agree with Druckenmiller on this!

Conviction means controlling emotions under pressure.

betting big is for the courage everyone quotes. fighting your own certainty after the position is already on is for the courage nobody films an interview about. those were never the same nerve.

If you’re afraid to bet big, don’t expect extraordinary returns.

1992 sterling short. Druckenmiller sized it at 200% of Quantum's capital. Soros told him to go bigger. $1B in a day. That is what concentrated actually looks like on the tape.

The courage part is what most people skip. Being open-minded is easy until your biggest position is bleeding and every instinct says sell.
