Starlab is designed to enable advanced biomedical breakthroughs. Its 8-meter diameter habitat, and approximately 400 cubic meters of pressurized volume, allows Starlab to support 100% of the International Space Station’s research payload capacity. The internal payload lab includes 13 payload platforms, with a total capacity of 130 MDLEs, a... portion of which will be used for support facilities, including a glovebox, cold stowage, optical bench and workbench. Greater capacity enables broader access for researchers studying treatments for cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes and other complex conditions. At an Appropriations hearing to review the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) budget, I pressed the NIH Director on the Administration’s proposal to cut funding for biomedical research. These cuts would result in a nearly 40% reduction in funding for the National Institute on Aging, which supports most Alzheimer’s research. As progress is finally being made with early detection tools and treatments that can slow Alzheimer’s disease, now is not the time to slash funding. Through my role as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to fight for funding to support lifesaving biomedical research.
