It was validating to hear Jacob echo these sentiments the first time he played an early version. With his help, we’ve added new controls, raising the ceiling on what players are able to do with it. Two weeks ago, I got laid off from my job. I always knew it was a possibility. I’ve worked in tech long enough to see layoffs happen over and over again. When my wife and I moved to Northern California and bought a house, I started thinking that I should probably have a backup plan if it ever happened to me. So I started a stump removal business. I bought a stump grinder and started putting the marketing skills I’ve learned over the years to work. I made flyers, road signs and business cards. Built a website with a bunch of local pages for SEO. Set up my Google Business profile. Reached out to tree companies and started building relationships. A few months later, I’m #3 on Google locally and on track to do around $50k in the first year. Then I actually got laid off. I’m still looking for my next role in marketing, but I’m really glad I decided to build something on the side before I needed it. And with all the uncertainty around AI and what it means for jobs long term, I also like knowing I have a business where the work has to be done in the real world. Bonus: After working in an office for the last 10 years, I forgot how good it feels to work outside and actually see what you accomplished at the end of the day. There’s something pretty satisfying about showing up to a yard with a giant stump and leaving with it gone.
