I grew up skiing in Utah. I never surfed a day in my life. That being said I've now bet everything on a luxury housing project in a boutique surf town! I started boogie boarding 5 years ago and absolutely love it! I bought a surf skate to try to learn at home but after falling on the pavement 20 times I realized I'm probably a bit old for that. My goal is to keep one of the homes in my project so that my kids can grow up surfing and I can learn beside them. It’s hard to explain but the feeling of being in the warm ocean water at 7 AM is hard to beat.

the ganges is a powerful force... i remember this day clearer than most days in my life. i got sucked down into the deepest parts of the river valley, so deep there was no blue, no surface, no water.. just darkness. pitch black. when you’re that deep you curl into a ball and cover your head so you don’t get knocked out on jagged rock... no life vest, just me and the current. every time i saw nothing but black another wave smashed me into a rock and launched me up just long enough to breathe, then back into darkness. at the deepest points my lungs were empty and my body froze... at one point i gave up. said bye to myself. gulped river water and sank deeper, eyes closed. right when i was done i got pushed up one last time and heard my friend screaming to swim to the beach... too late, i was dead center of the current. people on the shore yelling my name. my body was empty, not even enough energy to paddle. i saw a huge rock and reached out, it swept past me but i caught it with two fingers. the river pulled my legs south while i dragged my body up. somehow i clawed one foot onto the rock... only my face made it up. i felt warm and wet, thought i pissed myself, but it was blood pouring down my body. i couldn’t move, just laid there... gravity pinned me onto knife-shaped rock cutting deeper. voices yelling and then blackout. an hour later a motorboat came up the river. my friend argued with the pilots and finally said fuck it, i’ll pay whatever... my eyes were filled with blood. i didn’t want to negotiate. i wanted to survive. people come to the ganges to die, to be burned to ash and returned to it... i went there to be born again. my body burned in the sun for weeks, bruised and bloodied, barely able to walk. a hostel cleaned my wounds, gave me meds. i almost lost a limb to infection, but i survived. second life... new reason to live with purpose. this sunset feels like a homecoming. days end but life keeps moving... live hard. take risks, maybe not this risky. show up every day. put your whole body and heart on the line. you’re gonna win. my full set from rishikesh is out now

This weekend I've been working on a watercolor simulator based (as much as possible) on real physics. It's built on Curtis et al.'s watercolor model (SIGGRAPH 1997) with a fluid layer, drifting pigment and wet paper fibers. I decided to explore this because I love watercolor painting, and when I do some, my favourite moment is when the pigments get mixed inside the water and spread chaotically. The transparency, the lack of control, the depth of the colors in that moment is what I enjoy the most. So I started to wonder how code could help fix that moment in time and started chatting with my bestie Claudy. Early WIP so don't mind the look.

Living with MS for me means numbness in my hands on a daily basis and living in fear of waking up one day and not being able to walk. What a beautiful, laid-back year. I worked and rested in equal measure, I laughed hard and loved hard. And I travelled! I ate croissants in Paris, ate too much cheese in Amsterdam, had amazing fish in Mozambique, swam at the edge of the Victoria Falls, had ice cream in Zambia, lunch in Botswana, coffee in Kenya and bitterballen in Den Haag. I fell in love with windmills and canals, trains and bicycles, and enjoyed European winter. Netherlands was a second home 😍 And I finally explored Cape Town like a tourist and went home every chance I got. And I went to the gym, hiked Lion’s Head religiously and went to church. And my career catapulted. I wouldn’t even know where to begin expressing my gratitude because it wasn’t just hard work, it was my seniors at work vouching for me, motivating for me and dropping my name in high places. It was my postgraduate students working hard and cooperating. It was my supervisor saying: “I feel like I photocopied myself in you.” And her pushing me in her footsteps -Guiding me on Funding, Ratings, Publications, Patents, Roping me into high-value projects and mentoring me like a mother. I got ALL the fundings I applied for. Like all of them said YES. I’m still speechless. I got NRF rated (Super huge for my career). I was granted a patent for the nanocomposite I produced during my PhD by South Africa, UK and USA, and the university poured funds into me moving to commercialisation (This happened after I wrote an email to the VC one 3 am. I woke up regretting how ‘harsh’ I had sounded and wanted to walk up to his office and ask him to delete the email before reading it - Long story 💀 But turns out I had just been assertive and not rude, so yay! “Sign here, here and here.”) In all the cities I went to this year, I wrote the way I think - endlessly, deeply and utterly silly sometimes. I wrote my heart out and fought hard against impostor syndrome. And I got the Outstanding Author award, making me a Multi-award winner… It meant the world! I also finally stopped focusing on the next goal and slowed down. I savoured every moment as it happened and was present in real life. I looked out of airplane windows, went to spas regularly and drank a lot of tea. I also stopped trying to lose weight and ate my heart out. This year, I gave myself the love and kindness I give other people, and I was very gentle with myself. Through it all, God carried me and loved me as if I was His only creation. And I made many connections on and offline. And as always, I enjoyed Twitter a LOT. All that made the year so so beautiful 😍 Also refurnished my house and renovated just nje for no reason at all 🤭 Oh, and I LOVED and allowed myself to be LOVED 😍 And I took many pictures of innuendos 🤭🤣 Chilling and working just enough has been fun, but resting is over.
