SUDAN'S UNDYING SPIRIT 17 MONTHS INTO WAR Two Sudanese men typify the war-torn country's unbowed spirit as the 17-month-long conflict rumbles on. British outlet Channel 4 News featured Rasheed Ahmed and Mohammed Bannaga in a May story about the situation. Ahmed, from the city of Omdurman, vowed to rebuild his shattered home once the war ends. Bannaga, a medical doctor, has risked his life by staying behind and starting a soup kitchen to assist displaced people. It's the kind of spirit needed to rebuild Africa's third-largest country by area. The war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, and propped up by foreign states, has displaced over 10 million Sudanese and k*lled nearly 19,000 (with the US envoy reporting in May that figure might be 150,000). Meanwhile, 25.6 million people suffer acute hunger, and 755,000 are on the brink of famine. International media has largely kept Sudan out of their news cycles as global attention has focused on Gaza and Ukraine. But Sudan's situation is already catastrophic, with no clear end in sight.

Happy Final Space Friday! So I'm patiently waiting for notes and feedback from the test readers I sent out, they should come in next week. I gave everyone a week to digest it. Once I have those notes I'll have a good idea if we need to ink/ letter anything new or fix anything but for the most part all polish is pretty much done. Daz Tibbles for NOW has moved on to coloring part 8. Joe is still coloring the last pieces to Part 6 after that I'll move him to Part 7. On the soundtrack front, I'm starting to have conversation with the composers on how to best to time the songs based on how long it takes to read certain chapters. And then QR codes and all that fun that I've never done before. The good news the music is sounding awesome and it really does add to the whole experience. I'm also working up the back matter to the novel as well, all the behind the scenes pages in the back of the book. Also getting quotes from the printer for the black and white novels any days now. So lots of progress, I'm hoping the notes and feedback don't break anything too big but I think they will all really enjoy it. Anyways here is a new work in progress from Andrew Andrew Goodwin, I like this for the MASSIVE Part 6 but I gave him the note to tone it down in sections for the emotions part so were playing with how to make the music really stick to the pages with the high and lows. Scoring graphic novel pages is a new thing for us haha -Olan PRE-ORDER:

What can these five babies teach us about language development? This week I’ve been exploring the stages of infant language acquisition. And today, I’ve done something special: curated a compilation of five videos tracing the progression of infant vocalizations over time. As you watch, note that each new clip represents a step forward in expressive language (and, obviously, age). So let’s meet our five babies! 1) Baby Number One, shared to TT by natashatenen, illustrates a concept I first introduced yesterday: Cooing. Note that her happy vocalizations are mostly extended vowel sounds. One of the first sounds babies make other than crying, cooing typically begins between 6 weeks and 3 months. 2) Now let’s meet Baby Number Two (shared to TT by putdewyy). He’s not far past the cooing stage… lots of vowel sounds are on display here…but he’s starting to make the transition to babbling. Notice how his vowel sounds are now supplemented by some initial consonants. He adds some “buh” and “bah” sounds. Babbling typically begins with single syllables (often buh, muh, and/or duh) between 4-6 months. It’s a subtle but important step forward. 3) You’ll notice that Baby Number Three’s speech is marked by a real qualitative upgrade in terms of both clarity and content. This little one, shared to TT by Vanessa.Fiorella, is demonstrating what is known as canonical babbling - which involves the repetition of a single syllable. While Baby Two managed a “bah” sound, Baby Three is firing them off in rapid succession: “bah-bah-bah-bah.” Canonical babbling often begins around 6-7 months. 4) Baby Number Four takes the complexity up a notch further. What you see in this video (shared to TT by sofiaandsofie1) is called variegated babbling - which combines multiple different syllable combinations. (“Duh-dah-di-di-di-dah”) Do you notice how variegated babbling is starting to resemble conventional/adult speech more and more? It’s commonly exhibited around 10-12 moths. 5) And then, just for the fun of it, I’ve included Baby Number 5 - who became a viral sensation last winter for the amazing complexity of his variegated babbling. The video, shared to TT by Xxbur5, shows a little guy with a cold diaper and a linguistic capacity that - only months after first babbling - has progressed exponentially and will soon make way for his first words. My secret project that has been in the works is finally done!! Adopted 2 benches for Bin at Esplanade, Singapore! 💜🤍 Starting this project as a little secret of mine helped me cope with the grief I had in my heart, because it made me look forward to something, and I really wanted to give something back to Bin for all the times he brought light in my life~ it’s the last precious memory that Bin and I will share together so I’ll keep close to my heart! 🫶🏼 It all started since a few days after the news broke… It started as a thought of “what if I can adopt a bench in Singapore?” after finding out that the Seoul bench adoption will expire in a few years… then the thoughts sparked into an action and after so long it’s finally completed 🥹 23/4/23: the thought process started and the search for a project began 26/4/23: contacted Esplanade 28/4/23: first viewing of the available benches 3/5/23: second viewing of some selected benches, decision to adopt & donation made 29/5/23: Plaques on benches installed It was tough choosing the locations, but what finally got me to decide was the amazing view and breeze at the waterfront bench 🌃🌬️, and the sighting of some butterflies and the moon at the Forecourt garden bench 🦋🌙 Bin-ah I asked you multiple times to tell me what you wanted since I couldn’t decide, and it seems like you wanted both (hence the strong winds like you were giving me a hug at the first bench and the moon at night at the second bench)… so I got you both are you happy?🤭 You can choose to sit at the waterfront bench and enjoy the breeze and pretty waters which I know you’ll love, or you can go to the forecourt bench and lie down and sleep because it’s so big 😂 The waterfront bench has a 10 year renewal so I’ll renew every 10 years as I renew my promise to remember you and live well~ and the Forecourt garden bench is a lifetime adoption which means you’ll always be remembered~ But Bin-ah was it your doing? I wanted the plaques to be up on the 26th of May since 26 is a special number because of your birthday, but there was a delay so it couldn’t be done! Then I requested for 6th June as it’ll be the 49th day of you leaving to a happier place but… suddenly the admin staff told me they were installing it yesterday??? What were the odds? It was right after my exams… was that you delaying the project because you wanted me to focus on my exams?🥹🥲 I wrote in my letter that I wanted you to bless me for my exams and I guess you did by celebrating with me with such news after the exams 😌 I guess you also wanted to visit earlier 🤭 It’s a bittersweet feeling really… I’m really happy with what I’ve done yet it hurts thinking of the reason of why I even thought of this project to do… I’ll come often when I miss you so please visit often okay! My secret project that has been in the works is finally done!! Adopted 2 benches for Bin at Esplanade, Singapore! 💜🤍 Starting this project as a little secret of mine helped me cope with the grief I had in my heart, because it made me look forward to something, and I really wanted to give something back to Bin for all the times he brought light in my life~ it’s the last precious memory that Bin and I will share together so I’ll keep close to my heart! 🫶🏼 It all started since a few days after the news broke… It started as a thought of “what if I can adopt a bench in Singapore?” after finding out that the Seoul bench adoption will expire in a few years… then the thoughts sparked into an action and after so long it’s finally completed 🥹 23/4/23: the thought process started and the search for a project began 26/4/23: contacted Esplanade 28/4/23: first viewing of the available benches 3/5/23: second viewing of some selected benches, decision to adopt & donation made 29/5/23: Plaques on benches installed It was tough choosing the locations, but what finally got me to decide was the amazing view and breeze at the waterfront bench 🌃🌬️, and the sighting of some butterflies and the moon at the Forecourt garden bench 🦋🌙 Bin-ah I asked you multiple times to tell me what you wanted since I couldn’t decide, and it seems like you wanted both (hence the strong winds like you were giving me a hug at the first bench and the moon at night at the second bench)… so I got you both are you happy?🤭 You can choose to sit at the waterfront bench and enjoy the breeze and pretty waters which I know you’ll love, or you can go to the forecourt bench and lie down and sleep because it’s so big 😂 The waterfront bench has a 10 year renewal so I’ll renew every 10 years as I renew my promise to remember you and live well~ and the Forecourt garden bench is a lifetime adoption which means you’ll always be remembered~ But Bin-ah was it your doing? I wanted the plaques to be up on the 26th of May since 26 is a special number because of your birthday, but there was a delay so it couldn’t be done! Then I requested for 6th June as it’ll be the 49th day of you leaving to a happier place but… suddenly the admin staff told me they were installing it yesterday??? What were the odds? It was right after my exams… was that you delaying the project because you wanted me to focus on my exams?🥹🥲 I wrote in my letter that I wanted you to bless me for my exams and I guess you did by celebrating with me with such news after the exams 😌 I guess you also wanted to visit earlier 🤭 It’s a bittersweet feeling really… I’m really happy with what I’ve done yet it hurts thinking of the reason of why I even thought of this project to do… I’ll come often when I miss you so please visit often okay! PHONE TAPPING CASE: THE ORIGINS Telangana politics are currently revolving around a bunch of scams including the Naini Coal Block Singareni scam of the Congress leaders and SIT enquiries of BRS leaders in the alleged phone tapping case. But what started this? Yes - the Naini Coal Block scam probably caused the current set of SIT enquiries. But what is the origin story of the whole “Phone Tapping Scandal”? Well, we have to go way back into history where after bifurcation, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh shared the common capital - Hyderabad. And current chief minister of Telangana Revanth Reddy was a not so known TDP MLA. On a 31st May 2015, Congress leader Revanth Reddy, then with the Telugu Desam Party, was apprehended by the ACB with a cash bag of Rs 50 lakh, a bribe to Elvis Stephenson, a nominated MLA, for supporting TDP nominee Vem Narendar Reddy in the Telangana legislative council elections. Everything was caught on camera. A voice recording allegedly that of AP CM Chandrababu Naidu was also released to the media along with the camera footage of the whole cash transaction. The then TDP MLA Revanth Reddy was arrested. He was later released on bail for his daughter’s wedding with a condition that he doesn’t speak at all during the wedding. The case resulted in AP CM Chandrababu Naidu temporarily moving to Vijayawada and starting the grand plans for Amaravathi. Though Hyderabad was a common capital for 10 years, the government decided to shift because the TDP government didn’t feel Hyderabad is “safe” anymore. The Cash for Votes scam also was very efficiently used by Revanth Reddy who was never even a minister until then to become a prominent leader. He catapulted himself into “only leader who can fight KCR” and in less than 10 years became the CM of Telangana. Was Revanth Reddy really a fighter or a perpetrator in the Cash for Vote scam (though the video is clear) needs to be decided by the honourable courts, someday. The case still is in the court. Now, after about 8 years of this scam, Revanth Reddy returns as the CM. He is not just powerful but angry too. He wants redemption for the humiliation of being caught with bag of cash and the subsequent prison time. That is how the current Phone Tapping Case came into existence. ✔️How did the KCR government manage to know of the deal? ✔️How did they get the video proofs? ✔️How did they get the audiotapes? Because they were listening to the calls??!! Revanth managed to weave a nice spicy narrative over years accusing KTR of listening to private calls of actresses in Tollywood. People love drama, especially that involves a scandal. TRS/BRS leaders never bothered to refute these claims strongly because they felt Revanth is too small for their attention. They were happy for saving the government from collapsing just one year of formation of a separate state. These rumours and salacious stories spread far and wide. Of course the current government won’t say Vote for Note case is the reason for Phone Tapping. The allegation is that BRS government was illegally listening into private phone conversations of about 1200 people including businessmen, politicians, journalists and even actresses. Both Vote for Note and Phone Tapping cases will come to a legal conclusion probably someday in the far future. But for now, the politics revolve around this. PS: The epic animosity between BRS supremo KCR and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu is at the crux of this. KCR wants to protect interests of Telangana while CBN claims he is the original architect and Andhras are the investors of Hyderabad. Last week, my husband sat down with Steven Bartlett from the Diary of a CEO. The behind the scenes on how we got such short notice to do his podcast was insane. Finding flights and trying to cram everything into a short period of time. We were on route to wrap up Pierre's USA tour when we got the email, we were in NYC. So now we had to figure out how to get to LA fast, and back on time for Monday's meetings in Ottawa. There was no way we were going to pass on this. Why? My personal thoughts were because I have watched Diary of a CEO for over a year, and what I have seen from Steven and his team is beyond anything else out there. The level of research they do on their guests, and their capacity to ask ANY question, the tough ones, the more personal ones, in such a professional manner. It is not about trying to get a “gotcha” moment. It is about truly getting to know and understand the person sitting across from Steven. This time, it was my husband. I saw him like in no other interview. Finally relaxed, being himself, so open to talk about everything, including his childhood, his adoptive parents AND biological parents. But also about our beloved Valentina. I can say with confidence that this is THE MOST IN-DEPTH interview Pierre has ever done. Steven did not hold back. But he does it with respect, and in a format that allows people to fully explain themselves. That is the magic of these long-format platforms.
