Melbourne’s main focus at training was pretty clear: transition, defensive shape and finding overlap run behind the footy. Almost every drill came back to it, with Gawn and Viney especially vocal. Disco had his left knee heavily strapped and lasted only a few light agility drills. Lever didn’t train, while Jefferson was restricted to very slow laps. I’d be very surprised if he got up for Saturday. Viney looked sharp and provided plenty of leadership. He has to be right in the selection conversation. The girl who treated the dictionary like a bit of light reading grew up spending Saturdays in a windowless van that reeked of formaldehyde, riding with a man named George who chain-smoked and told stories about the years they still used arsenic.
