Andrea Smith should be worried about the price of gas and formula and diapers. But that’s the least of it. She’s more concerned about the gaping demolition holes on each side of her house, filled with muck and rainwater and debris. “Mayor, clean this up,” she fumed. “I got four kids, what if my kids fall in here?” As far as Ms. Smith is concerned, Mike Duggan belongs nowhere near the governor’s mansion. He belongs in a defendant’s chair. The city of Detroit, under his 12-year stewardship, finds itself the victim of a mass poisoning of unknown proportions. Toxic dirt was used to fill the city’s demolition holes. And Duggan, by all accounts, pushed his demolition executives to the breaking point so he might have something good to campaign on as he makes a run to become Michigan’s next governor. But the mud pie has exploded in his face. With no real plan to fix things, Duggan and the new administration of Mayor Mary Sheffield engage in stupidity and budgetary sleight-of-hand to keep a lid on an environmental scandal that could rival Flint. Some quick but necessary background here. The U.S. Treasury Department in 2014 sent $260 million to the city of Detroit to help eradicate its enormous blight. Demolition contractors were allowed by Duggan to charge whatever they wanted for “clean” soil to fill the holes. Incredulously, no receipts or proof of purchase were required. That is until federal agents caught the contractors and fined the city $5 million. The city agreed, going forward, to require invoice receipts for the dirt. But the city never did collect those receipts. Once again, in 2021, the Treasury Department spanked the city over $13 million in bogus dirt. Duggan, who’s dodged more grand juries in his career than John Gotti, settled with the U.S. government for $1.5 million. Duggan then pushed for another $250 million from Detroit taxpayers to continue his blight crusade. And again, neither he nor his minions required proof that the dirt was clean. More than 27,000 houses were demolished under the stewardship of the Teflon Leprechaun, and people like Ms. Smith have no idea just how bad things are in their neighborhoods. So far, the city has admitted to 600 suspect holes and is now in the process of testing them. But how do we know that’s the extent of it? Remember, Duggan never required the demolition contractors to provide proof of the origin of the dirt going back a dozen years. Is it hundreds of lots? Thousands? Tens of thousands? We could be talking about hundreds of millions of dollars in clean-up costs. And now we come to find out that Duggan’s hand-picked minority contractor, Brian McKinney of the Gayanga Company, was allowed to illegally work without construction insurance. Current Mayor Mary Sheffield certainly knew of this. She was dating the guy, after all, while simultaneously voting to award millions in contracts. So now, the taxpayer is on the hook, having to pay twice for the same dirty jobs. Just a few weeks ago, Duggan was cornered by the press, who are suddenly interested in dirt. “As of December 31st when I left office, every single site that had been tested at elevated contaminants had been removed and clean dirt replaced,” said an exasperated Duggan, who looked like he’d been beaten with a feather pillow. Naturally, this was a lie. Just take a trip to Tacoma Street and ask Andrea Smith who is living with her four children in a hellscape of incompetence and danger. Today, I want to share two big lessons I learnt in the past one month. So here’s what happened. It all started with an unexpected physical setback of all places in Port Blair (now Sri Vijayapuram) on 20th December. That morning, I suddenly suffered what is called in medical terms, bilateral foot drop, meaning I lost all power in my feet. I couldn’t walk without support (the 1st video shows the limpness in feet); Somehow, I got back to Delhi on a wheelchair. As I consulted Dr Satnam Chhabra, renowned neurosurgeon (he had treated me earlier) at the Gangaram Hospital. He was worried and immediately recommended surgery since my L-4 disc was compressing the nerve. As I was mentally preparing to undergo the surgery in the last week of 2024, many dark and negative thoughts were playing in the mind (will I have to spend rest of my life on wheelchair? Will prolonged sitting and writing be a problem?) My immediate family was equally worried since we were told, it normally takes 6-7 months of intense physiotherapy and exercise to regain the strength and ‘flex’ in my feet even after the surgery. As I waited for the scheduled day of surgery and as the year was ebbing away, pessimism was creeping in. Then a friend suggested I consult Dr Sandeep Vaishya, another highly-skilled neurosurgeon and executive director of Fortis Hospitals. Thanks to this friend, Dr Sandeep said he will carry out a ‘key-hole’ surgery, which is quicker than an open surgery and takes lesser time to heal. So, on 30th December, I was wheeled into the operation theatre. Five hours later, I was back in the room and by evening, the hospital physiotherapist made me walk, albeit with support (2nd video). As the New Year dawned, I was back home! Now came the part entirely dependent on my own mental and physical strength, support and care by my wife and children. Thus began the recovery process. After a weeklong break, our websites and YT channels were back to work in the meantime. Since I know nothing else but work, it was hard to stay away from office. So, I took courage in both hands and went to office on 3rd January so as to assess my own ability to recover quickly (3rd video). Two weeks since then, life is almost back to normal (4th video, welcoming Nana Patekar to office on 17th January). I like to consider myself as a practical, take-life-as-it-comes-kind of a guy. And so far life has indeed been a busy, fulfilling journey with no time to philosophise much but the last 30 days have taught me to think deeper. Why am I sharing these details? Because of two reasons: A reinforcement of my own long-held belief that life can be extremely uncertain and therefore one must live in the moment, enjoy every opportunity that comes one’s way to achieve whatever your aim in life is and not plan too much for the future. And two, family, friends and their support is the greatest wealth one can acquire. Celebrate them and this incredible gift called life. Rest is all peripheral.

「Leifang‘s story」 Bright, honest, kind to everyone….and sometimes a little mean. That’s the type of girl Leifang is. Born into a wealthy family and always wanting to be the best at everything, she studied hard and took many lessons. But what she was best at was the martial art she had started just so she wouldn’t lose to any boys, Tai Chi. At first, it was just another lesson. But by the time she was 13, she had become so strong that even the teenage students at the dojo could no longer keep up with her. As her skills improved faster than everyone else‘s, people continued to praise her, making her feel fullfilled. One day, as usual, she was walking to the dojo when she saw a boy surrounded by two tall men wearing dark glasses. “I don’t have any money!” the boy cried. The other adults pretended not to see. “I have to help him!” Smack! The two men suddenly took a hard blow to the face and were shocked when they realized their attacker was just a thin little girl. Then, another hit! Leifang moved smoothly and quickly, like she was drawing in air, and struck both men again and again. Soon, one of them collapsed. The other man, furious, pulls out a knife. The next moment, blood splatters from Leifang‘s right arm. “I’ve been stabbed…!” With a loud battle shout, something flashed through the air and the man with the knife went flying. Standing in front of the shocked Leifang was a boy about her age. The boy who appeared so suddenly said nothing and walked away. From her sight, the uniform with a dragon embroidered on it slowly disappeared. “What was up with him? I didn’t even need any help… I totally didn’t!!” From that day on, Leifang trained harder than ever, even defeating the assistant instructor at her dojo a few years later. But even now, she couldn‘t forget. “That guy. I want to see him again….” Leifang didn’t understand the strange, feeling in her chest, but she felt sure that if she could defeat that boy from that day, everything would finally feel right. So she decides to leave home, even though her parents cried and begged her not to. “I’m absolutely going to go defeat him!”

I think CihAl's consummation (or whatever else you'd like to call it) scene is probably one of the most well-thought-out ones of the series. It's perfect for Alya and Cihan's characters. And, if you watch the build-up, you can pinpoint where both decide to take their relationship to the next step. Let's start with my baby girl. Alya makes up her mind that she's done minding the distance between Cihan and herself pretty early on after she enters her room. The way she turns and looks back at the door with a half-smile. Then the camera pans in on the liquor, almost as if to say, she's thinking maybe she needs a little fortitude. And in the next room, Cihan is going through the same restlessness, almost like he's chomping at the bit too, but can't bring himself to act on what he's thinking. Next up, Alya downs some liquid courage and fills her glass again, almost as if a plan's forming in her head. And when she walks out of her room, she pauses, staring at Cihan's door. Eventually, she decides against it because, like the queen she is, she wants a neutral setting, not to overwhelm Cihan, but to engage Cihan's caution, and to see if he's ready to leave it behind. A broken vase later, when Cihan finally descends the steps to go to his wife, Alya gives him a very unconvincing performance of drunkenness. She wants to invite him to sit with her and iron a few things out between them. This is where her playacting is important because it gives them both protection. If Cihan isn't ready to move forward, she can retreat with her dignity, and he wouldn't have to feel pressured or remorseful. But, Cihan, being the brainiac he is, understands his wife is up to something. And, of course, he wants her like crazy, too, so he decides to play along while upping the ante a little - which is why he offers to carry her to her room. Her room. Not his. Because no matter what transpires, his priority is her comfort. So, up they go, and when he lays her down on her bed, Alya pulls him to sit next to her, and switches to phase two. Remember when I said she doesn't want to override him? Her sequence of questions is a gentle attempt to determine if she's read him correctly. That his guilt is no longer the determining factor in their relationship, without triggering any resentment. Why are we staying in separate rooms? Aren't we married? Don't you love me? Don't I love you? Aren't you my husband? Am I not your wife? Then why are we sleeping in separate beds? See? It's a logical dismantling of the remaining distance between them. And every time Cihan answers, it gives her more courage to move forward, it gives her more hope. Cihan isn't being led; he's an active participant, and he is choosing to be. Step by step, to move forward with Alya, by staying in the conversation, to meet her halfway. Then comes the cute nose-rubbing session, and you can see Cihan wants to give in. But old habits die hard, so he has to be sure. Did you drink too much he asks, and that's when Alya gives up her game. Because she's sure too. She tells him how she only drank one glass of wine and how she broke that vase on purpose. Because when they're so close to the brink, she lays all her cards on the table, like always. It isn't like her to hide. And when Cihan brings the topic back to her drunkenness again, that's him proceeding with care. Baby steps. This is his life we're talking about... I mean, his wife. So, Alya Hanim takes up the challenge and asks, 'Would I only want to when I'm drunk?' things are clear as day. The proverbial bulb goes on in Ciho's head. His 'I don't know, maybe' is him being coy, like the imp he is. But all that playfulness goes out the window when his wife says, 'Wouldn't you like to find out?' I think Alya may have managed to give Cihan a mini heart attack with those words, because his answer is so faint, it's laughable. From that point on, it's all engines go for both of them. They're sure now, their minds and hearts are on the same page. After that, it's all love, desire, flirtatiousness, playful goading, and everything that's quintessentially CihAl. Brilliantly written and masterfully portrayed. #CihAl #UzakŞehir

But, Cihan, being the brainiac he is, understands his wife is up to something. And, of course, he wants her like crazy, too, so he decides to play along while upping the ante a little - which is why he offers to carry her to her room. Her room. Not his. Because no matter what transpires, his priority is her comfort. So, up they go, and when he lays her down on her bed, Alya pulls him to sit next to her, and switches to phase two. Remember when I said she doesn't want to override him? Her sequence of questions is a gentle attempt to determine if she's read him correctly. That his guilt is no longer the determining factor in their relationship, without triggering any resentment. Why are we staying in separate rooms? Aren't we married? Don't you love me? Don't I love you? Aren't you my husband? Am I not your wife? Then why are we sleeping in separate beds? See? It's a logical dismantling of the remaining distance between them. And every time Cihan answers, it gives her more courage to move forward, it gives her more hope. Cihan isn't being led; he's an active participant, and he is choosing to be. Step by step, to move forward with Alya, by staying in the conversation, to meet her halfway. Then comes the cute nose-rubbing session, and you can see Cihan wants to give in. But old habits die hard, so he has to be sure. Did you drink too much he asks, and that's when Alya gives up her game. Because she's sure too. She tells him how she only drank one glass of wine and how she broke that vase on purpose. Because when they're so close to the brink, she lays all her cards on the table, like always. It isn't like her to hide. And when Cihan brings the topic back to her drunkenness again, that's him proceeding with care. Baby steps. This is his life we're talking about... I mean, his wife. So, Alya Hanim takes up the challenge and asks, 'Would I only want to when I'm drunk?' things are clear as day. The proverbial bulb goes on in Ciho's head. His 'I don't know, maybe' is him being coy, like the imp he is. But all that playfulness goes out the window when his wife says, 'Wouldn't you like to find out?' I think Alya may have managed to give Cihan a mini heart attack with those words, because his answer is so faint, it's laughable. From that point on, it's all engines go for both of them. EXCLUSIVE: Young Ontario woman's life becomes a living hell after Moderna booster shot leaves her paralyzed. Doctors confirm vaccine connection and offer Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID). Kayla Pollock is a 37-year-old mother from Ontario whose life took a drastic turn after receiving a Moderna Covid-19 booster shot. She experienced paralysis from the neck down and has been enduring a challenging ordeal ever since. Kayla's early years were marked by unspeakable cruelty and suffering. As an infant, she endured the horrors of severe abuse, including broken bones, cigarette burns, and bruises inflicted upon her helpless body by her parents. Kayla eventually ended up in the small town of Mount Albert, Ontario, where she co-raised her son after a separation. She worked as a casual educational assistant at Robert Munsch Public School, assisting kindergarten children. Her home was conveniently located right next to the school. Kayla's son attended the same school where she worked, and she expressed her love for her job and the positive direction her life was heading. Describing herself as fit, healthy, and very active, Kayla enjoyed hiking, being outdoors, gardening, and going places with her son. When the pandemic struck, Kayla recalls the mainstream media, politicians, and public health officials emphasizing the severity of the virus and urging everyone to get vaccinated. She remembers health officials specifically advising that those at highest risk should prioritize getting vaccinated. Being immunocompromised and a type one diabetic, Kayla heeded the advice of health officials and received the first two Pfizer shots in the middle of 2021 and didn’t experience any issues. Additionally, she mentions another reason for getting vaccinated was because her father resided in a long-term care facility with dementia, and vaccination was going to be a requirement for entry into the care home. Kayla then decided to take a booster, but this time it was a Moderna booster shot. She recounts going to a vaccination drive and the police being there. She found that odd and questioned why the police were present. According to Kayla, people were upset that Moderna was being given out instead of Pfizer, and that was the reason for the police presence. Kayla says that something didn’t sit right in her gut, but she went ahead with the Moderna booster shot anyway. She explains her reasoning for getting the third shot was because she felt like a third one would be mandated at some point to get access into her dads long term care home. She received the Moderna booster shot on January 11, 2022. Four days later, Kayla described a situation where her legs just gave out, and she collapsed, but all seemed fine a short time later. Then, nine days later, she experienced a similar event, and at that time, she called her doctor, asking to see a neurologist because she suspected something wasn’t right. On the morning of February 22, 2022, Kayla's life took an irreversible turn. As she awoke, opened her eyes, a sudden realization struck her – she couldn't move her body. Despite the shock, she says she remained calm and started yelling for help. Fortunately, her boyfriend who spent the night, was in the driveway preparing to leave for work, and heard her cries for help. Her boyfriend called 911 and Kayla was transported to Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, Ontario. While in the emergency department Kayla recounts that the attending physician initially dismissed her symptoms, suggesting that it was all in her head and portrayed her as a "crazy person," and ordered a psychiatric consult. All of what Kayla describes happening is evident in her medical records which we obtained and reviewed. Eventually, an MRI was conducted, revealing that Kayla had a very large lesion on her spinal cord. A neurologist followed up with Kayla and recommended a course of steroids in an attempt to decrease the size of the lesion. Kayla questioned the neurologist and asked if the lesion could be a tumor. In an audio recording taken by Kayla’s boyfriend, the neurologist responds, saying, “it's less likely a tumor” and that it is his “gut impression it was caused by the vaccine.” When Kayla questions the doctor as to whether many people have had something similar happen to them, the doctor responds, saying “many people have had it.” Later, Kayla would learn that she had developed transverse myelitis, a condition that interrupts the transmission of messages along the spinal cord nerves throughout the body. She would go on to spend several months in the hospital, where she says she was offered medical assistance in dying (MAID) on two occasions but rejected the offer. During Kayla's hospital stay, she received steroids, which she claims helped to some extent, allowing her to regain very slight movement in her arms, hands, and fingers. However, she still has absolutely no feeling from the neck down. Visually examining her fingernails reveals decay due to the lack of nerve function. Kayla believes that if the initial doctor had taken her concerns seriously, rather than dismissing her as a "crazy person," and promptly ordered an MRI, she might have been able to walk again or experience sensation in some parts of her body that she doesn’t have today. After her initial treatment at the local hospital, Kayla was subsequently transferred to Lyndhurst Rehabilitation Centre in Toronto to undergo several months of intensive rehabilitation aimed at attempting to restore her physical capabilities and adapting to her new reality. Unfortunately, Kayla says that rehab did not help her. Following her discharge from the hospital, she now takes a long list of drugs daily. She ended up losing everything she worked hard for—her home, the ability to co-raise her son, and her job, essentially losing everything. Kayla was placed on provincial disability and was forced to move away from Mount Albert, where her son lives, into an apartment that could accommodate her wheelchair accessibility needs. Kayla has faced challenges in obtaining the promised hours of in-home care after leaving the hospital. Kayla relies on a personal support worker to help her get out of bed each morning, another organization assists with meal preparation, and in the evenings, a friend comes over to manually extract feces from her bowel and aid her in getting into bed. Securing compensation through the federal government’s Vaccine Injury Support Program (VISP) has been difficult for Kayla. She initiated the application process in July of 2022, following up with the program six months later. However, according to Kayla, her application was still under review at that time. Another six months elapsed, and when she sought an update, the program informed her that they had never received her initial application. In response, Kayla reapplied to the program and was recently assigned a case worker.
