Some beautiful footage from the dam of a remote beaver pond in early spring this year. You can hear the sounds of spring all around this pond, which we call “Capsaicin Pond” (story behind that below). But this is more than just pretty footage...the footage highlights an interesting dynamic in the wolf packs in this area...because all the wolves in the video belong to different packs but they all have a history with one another. Notably, this pond is in an area of overlap between the Half-Moon and Lightfoot Pack territories. He and his mate kicked out Wolf V094, the longstanding breeding male of the Half-Moon Pack, in Fall 2024. And Wolf V094 just so happens to be the 2nd wolf in this video, and Wolf Y15C’s mate happens to be V094’s daughter. Small world! Wolf V094 was a lone wolf at the time this video was taken but he joined the Peatlands Pack later this past summer. But you can tell he is getting to be an old fellow. And then the last wolf on camera is the breeding female of the Lightfoot Pack (Wolf B3S). She recently became the breeding female of the Lightfoot Pack after kicking out her mother in Fall 2024. And as it turns out, her mate is the son of Wolf V094. This old, moss-covered log was a popular place in the fall! The allure of the log caused some bears to temporarily lose their minds and the log paid the price for it! The wolves and some other forest critters were not too far behind the bears! At one point, a bear thought about making a very naughty decision with our trail camera, but amazingly, the bear showed incredible restraint and maturity. In fact, it is plain to see that the bear, upon approaching our camera, entered a deep state of introspection, self-reflection, and clarity, during which the bear realized it needed to turn away from its former destructive habits and enter into a new life of peace and pacifism. Very rare behavior for its kind. The wolves in the video are the Whiskey Point Pack. The one missing part of its ear is the breeding female and the other one scent-rolling in the daylight is a subordinate wolf Anyway, we hope this video brightens your day just a smidge!

A rare glimpse at the territorial nature of wolf packs. Instances like this probably happen regularly as wolves aim to maintain/expand their territory and eliminate neighboring wolves (i.e., competitors for resources). These snippets show the breeding pair of the Windsong Pack venturing out of their territory to chase the breeding male of the neighboring pack (the Blood Moon Pack). If the Windsong Pack had caught up to this wolf, they would have undoubtedly killed him. But they didn’t. The chase did not last very long—a handful of minutes with a straight-line distance of just under a mile. The first clips of the chase were from a camera on the edge of a beaver dam. The breeding male of the neighboring pack (Wolf Y1T) crossed the dam and clearly knew he was being followed. A minute later, the Windsong Pack passed by in pursuit. The next clips were captured about 4 minutes later on a second camera just under a mile to the north of the first one. On this second camera, Wolf Y1T was running full speed. However, the Windsong Pack while in pursuit, appeared to be slowing down. A minute later, the Windsong pair walks back past this camera…the chase had ended. About an hour after that, the Windsong Pack crossed the beaver dam that the first camera was on in their return trip to their territory. Interestingly, about 2 months after this video was captured, Wolf Y1T’s mate was killed by the neighboring pack to the south (Biondich Pack). Since the pack was only two wolves (Y1T and his mate), this event left Y1T by himself and the status of the Blood Moon Pack up in the air. However, within a few weeks, Y1T found another mate and through some series of events, Y1T and his new mate booted the Windsong pair (i.e., the wolves in this video pursuing Y1T) from their territory this past summer, and took it over. As such, Y1T and his mate (the Blood Moon Pack) currently occupy the Windsong Pack territory.
