Steve Baker’s rundown of excuses reads more like a political version of “the dog ate my homework.” Yes, there was a coalition, Brexit, and a pandemic, but who exactly was in charge during all of this? Spoiler: it wasn’t the general public. The idea that it will take only two or three years for people to be willing to listen to a Conservative leader again is rather optimistic, given the state of the economy, public services, and, well, general trust in the previous government, it may take an entire generation (or a very generous helping of collective amnesia).
