Still amazed that this won Best Editing
36 Comments

omg all the cuts what the heck

I had to turn this shit off

19 cuts in a 30 second clip of a dude sitting down and saying one line I can't even

there was a rumor at some point that this movie was so poorly directed and had such ridiculous restrictions put on it (all band members needing to have equal screentime, most famously) that it won best editing because it was a miracle that it didn't turn out any worse than it did

The fuck is littlefinger doing

They got it mixed up with ‘most editing’

Holy shit that’s the mayor of Baltimore

Especially egregious that BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY won Best Editing in the year of SUSPIRIA - which received no nomination.

The only reason people keep saying this scene has "really bad" editing is because of one of those YouTube videos from fake experts. Minimalist cutting is not the only way to cut a movie. Some of you would explode your brains if you watched Armegeddon ('98) closely.

Never noticed how choppy as fuck that is.

I feel sick just watching all these fucking cuts Jesus Christ.

who tf is throwing shade at A Beautiful Mind on this list. The only reason I'll accept is that they wanted Fellowship to win

There’s a pretty good interview with the editor where he goes through all the post production issues because apparently this is the best they could do with the footage they had.

I think Ben Shapiro’s best film criticism is when he likened this scene to a monkey behind the camera pulling levers to change shot angles

It's almost the worst editing in the history of film

It's even more insane on mute lol

“Ohhhhhh there a cut. cut bad. that mean movie bad. movie should be all one thing like real life. I so smart 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤”

I maintain that the entire film editing community collectively decided to flip Bryan Singer the bird and shower 2018 awards onto editor John Ottman for salvaging Bohemian Rhapsody.

Was this done by Mr Beast's editor? Holy crap

That whole movie was a disaster. It was a joke that it got a Best Picture nomination. Might be the worst movie ever to get one, actually.

That has more cuts than an emo teen looking for attention

jesus fucking christ... this is not just bad but actively irritating to watch... wtf?

The film is an absolute joke. I'm a massive Queen fan and the way they imply Freddie would have been ok if he wasn't gay is distasteful at best. Too many inaccuracies. How Roger Taylor and Brian May signed off a film where Freddie is seen as an absolute cunt is unforgivable.

The oscars are a joke

Crash, Chicago and a beautiful mind are all great movies

There was a hilarious Bollywood edit version someone made of this at the time that I’ve never been able to find since

It has been explained over 100 times that this won editing because the editor had nothing to work with and still ended up making something out of it. It's a reward for that.

wtf i didn’t know CIA was in the best edited sequence

Editing can't replicate real moments 😊

The craziest part is I didn’t even notice the editing issue on my first watch in the theater, I only began to notice it when I rewatched it at home while preparing for the Oscars. From what I understand, the choppy editing comes from the difficulty of blending footage shot by Bryan Singer and Dexter Fletcher. When Fletcher took over after Singer was fired, this was reportedly the only scene he reshot, which likely made the transition even harder to smooth out.

😭 thinking about how someone said it felt like a 3 hour tiktok when it won best editing

People always zero in on this scene and it is badly edited but never talk about the rest of the movie, which is cut fine. I don’t think it should’ve won but in totality, I’m fine with it being nominated

The cuts were okay up until he pointed at Freddie Mercury. There's just too many inconsistencies and awkward jumps. I don't think people would have been as harsh on the film had it not been given the Best Editing award.

Bohemian Rhapsody shouldn’t have won a single award. The whole thing is an insult to the true story of Freddie, and it’s a shame that Brian and Roger would ever agree to release such garbage.

I supposed they voted on most instead of best

"So this is Queen? ...I'm CIA."

Skyfall should’ve won the #Oscar for Best Picture, Javier Bardem should’ve won Best Supporting Actor & Roger Deakins deserved Best Cinematography. This film won Best Editing & Best Song- but that’s simply not enough. The best 007 film ever & one of the best films of this century.
