There are technologies that were perfected long ago and should only be scaled instead of improved. The best example is how we are still using the same aircraft designs from 1967 and have only improved efficiency for scaling

This was the first game I ever returned on PlayStation. It was unplayable right from the start because it relied on online services that didn’t work. It turned out to be a massive flop. Looking back, though, the graphics were great. The game didn’t sell, and the studio went out of business.

this game flopped commercially btw. sold poorly. studio got shut down. the devs who made this rain effect that people are STILL posting about 12 years later got laid off. that's the gaming industry in one sentence. the market didn't reward craft it rewarded marketing. the studios making "slop for $60" are still open and the studio that made this is dead. talent and quality don't save you if nobody buys it. what's the best game you never actually bought

You've selected a pretty classic case to fool the eye toward naturalism. Overcast diffused light, reflective puddles and a lens obscured by rain. So long as they do a fairly good job with the basics - mesh density, texture quality (which they did), the rest looks after itself.
