It really was such a saddening death, and it's one that could've easily been avoided had they made a backup of his data and core memory restored in a new vessel as you logically put it. We know of 2 other robot companions that had a similar sacrifice:

What would’ve made it even sadder was if instead of Reyes being rescued, you continue the game as Salter and your first mission as her is to search for Reyes, only to find him dead and Ethan clinging to his body…
