Mostly it's because 1) I don't want to dream about fighting w my dead wife anymore and waking up in cold sweats crying etc and 2) when I get angry I can't calm myself down. There are medical purposes for cannabis use. Those with debillitating arthritis can avoid opioid addiction etc....so context is very important. Recreational use? Possibly sinful but again, people smoke tobacco and drink alcohol for the same mind altering purpose. Difficult subject.

I tried THC for cancer pain at one point (didn't want to take all the redcap meds). I found the experience so unpleasant that I decided to just learn to live without either the THC or redcaps. I don't know how people use THC all the time, it made me feel gross and like my brain couldn't connect the dots well enough to so much as make a decent cup of tea. All while introducing a weird low-level anxiety. The harder pain meds were their own problem. I found I was better off with breathing techniques, prayer, distraction/shifting focus, etc.

Never smoked pot. But I have seen people talk about smoking regular tobacco as if that's a sin. I've only smoked cigars occasionally (usually social occasions). Any thoughts on that?

If you smoke weed to help yourself have peace, ask yourself why you aren't at peace? In this fallen world, even though Adam and Eve ate the fruit and were cursed with death, God still used it for good, and still helps us have discernment between good and evil if we call on him. If you aren't at peace, it means there's something in your life that needs to be fixed, something is wrong, and it can always be healed with more communion with God through his holy Spirit. "I need something to take the edge off" did you ever think that maybe the edge was there for a reason, to make you stronger and better? Ask yourself why you want to reject that? Furthermore, it's actually better to live in pain than in a state of false peace.

Pot is not compatible with Orthodoxy and he means well, but it does come across as condescending and flattens the entanglement of motivation to smoke. Intelligent people smoke weed because it offers novelty and enhances the senses; fanciful combinations of disparate categories can emerge. Euphoria indeed blunts existential anguish and dread however it silences moral certainty but not completely. The larger point remains, that perhaps the Holy Spirit can offer this supernatural peace, but many struggle with weed in deeply nuanced ways that there would be no end of individual case studies. Rather than suppose or flatten out those reasons it's better to just emphasize what God offers beyond pot.
