This sounds like older and younger Americans arguing about the correct pronunciation of words like water or coffee.

It’s more of where the voice is coming from. For you words are formed in the middle and back of the mouth for modern English and American English the voice is more the front forming the words. It would be interesting to learn when and why that changed happened.
