I want to see this same thing happen to cars next. The subscription economy needs to be contained.

You pay premium price for a product then end up paying monthly subscription for it. Makes no sense!

wrapped up in this is also the death of mega corporations; small teams of makers or a single entrepreneur can enter into manufacturing contracts and provide solutions direct to customers over relatively big multinationals who will keep enshittifying their products for profit

thank you for sharing!

Like why is my air fryer WI FI CAPABLE? Why?

I'm at a point where I've been researching how to repair AC and refrigerators on my own now because I absolutely refuse to buy the "smart" version.

The problem is not owning the full stack. Internet connectivity is fine per se.

Classic enshittification

Yes, with more n more devices now being AI enabled too, it's best to buy devices on which consumers have full control and not having to share access to device makers thru remote access. E.g. Alexa is known to eavesdrop on private conversations. Stay away from AI enabled systems.

Plus the need for QR codes need to hit the bin, majo cybersecurity and privacy issues

@davidbombal IOT Devices are easily accessed by Hackers wen connected to Internet

I’ve personally seen cases where a neighbor’s IoT devices (AC, fan, lights, etc.) were unintentionally exposed on the local network, making them controllable by others without proper authentication.

This was our master's big plan. That they'd give us UBI, but, they'd pay for it by taxing every millivolt going through your devices, renting your immune systems back to you with vaccine subscriptions, normal car features monetized, and paid for monthly by you...

Generally I think IoT devices are dangerous, talk less of the unsecured smart home that most come with default logins that are not changed, this issue of companies licensing products for customers is not appropriate at all, I just hope we realise this early and fight.

About 5 years ago I bought a fitbit versa 2 with the intention of having music on my watch and not having to have my phone with me on runs in a morning, 5 months later they removed the DRM citing security issues, meaning from then on, I couldn't add or alter music on the device..

ever wonder how many folks will always have no clue?

So no to all of it; digital ID smart devices big brother

All my smart devices are locally managed on my own server

You describe what Dutch banks like: @ABNAMRO did -> deciding we needed internetbanking. Every year their service needs more of our money to operatie. No longer building with bank employees to help and give cash and say: “hello” 😟

Hard to find 'non-smart' versions of things these days.

There is some misunderstandings going on here. Someone has to have servers and a permanent IP address or servers for dynamic DNS. That has to be paid for somehow. You can own your own IP address and servers but that too has to be paid for.

A lot of things we should not but, mostly tech. I just knocked an implant loose with an electric toothbrush. So clean. Elon musk will probably turn the moon into a server farm because it's so necessary for people who are trying to chew their 16 dollar sandwich with no teeth.

I hate and distrust that any device has to be internet connected. I intentionally never connected a “smart” thermostat in my home, although it kept trying to make me. I might program it myself if I knew would be absent.

Producers that can produce locally controllable network connected devices can still be trustworthy, I guess.

Get of our back side and do some manual work is actually not a bad idea

If it's connected, it can be hacked. It's that simple. Never buy anything needing an internet connection to operate.

Do you mean "smart" devices?

We need more companies to make up simple computers & then search engines, so we can be free for the MS /Google spyware.

Never buy a wifi connected appliance and if you do never connect it

Wholesome IoT is cool. Hate greed. Hate subscription services.

This is no longer science fiction complete total control over a corporate run. System is happening, and we see it as ease of living. What it really is is the burning of Rome, all the wild, keeping the peasants entertained through games and drink!

Well said! Great advice!
