Stop Freaking Out About “$50 Million a Year” — This Has Been Going On for Ages - That’s cute. Everyone is suddenly shocked that Australia is giving around $50 million a year in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan. But here’s the thing people keep ignoring: Australia hasn't just started sending... aid to Afghanistan recently — it’s been doing it for more than 20 years, going right back to the beginning of the Afghan war. Since 2001, Australia has provided about $1.8 billion in development and humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan. If we break it down by recent years (before the headlines): 2023–24: ~$70.8 million allocated to Afghanistan aid. 2024–25: ~$50 million budgeted. 2025–26: ~$50 million again in the budget. These numbers are the official DFAT allocations in the government’s annual aid budgets — not surprises pulled out of thin air. And that doesn’t count other money thrown at the crisis in response to specific disasters (like earthquakes) or broader humanitarian efforts since the Taliban takeover in 2021 — in that period alone Australia has pitched in over $260 million for humanitarian and basic needs. So if anyone wants to act like $50 million a year is some big, new thing, remind them that: Australia has been giving tens of millions every year since the early 2000s. In some years it’s been higher than $50 million. In the big picture, what’s being spent now is not a dramatic shift — it’s a continuation of decades of annual aid commitments. Mockler on Cost of Iran War: So in New York, they did free school lunches for $300 million a year, put that against the $50 billion, which is a conservative estimate for this war. We could have funded this across the country. How about in Connecticut? They have paid family leave. It was $450 million a year. And it is $5 million to start up. Put that against the $50 billion. It is a no brainer. What about one more in New Mexico. It costs $1.5 billion for free college. We could do that 20 times over with the $50 billion that we've spent.

Our policy from the beginning of the war was to ensure that the basic humanitarian needs of the civilian population in Gaza would be met. Israel has enabled a half million tons of humanitarian aid to get into Gaza, including 20,000 trucks of food. While Israel had paved roads and opened crossings so that this assistance could reach the people in Gaza, Hamas has stolen the aid, bombed the crossings and used Gazan civilians as human shields. Labor's budget has revealed that this government is blowing more than 364 million dollars on Anthony Albanese's unnecessary, divisive, race-based Voice referendum. Never in the history of this country has so much money been wasted on a referendum Australia shouldn’t even be having. There is no question this referendum is bitterly dividing Australia, and dividing indigenous Australia too. And there is no doubt this will be the most expensive referendum exercise ever. Added to the 75 million in the October Budget, this means taxpayers are forking out more than 400 million dollars for the Prime Minister’s personal vanity project. The last referendum in 1999 cost approximately 67 million dollars – adjusted for inflation, today it would have cost about 124 million dollars. There’s every reason to believe the extra money is being banked to fund the voice, which in their arrogance Labor will legislate even when the Australian people reject it. That’s why the ‘no’ vote must be overwhelming, and send the clear message to Labor that Australians will not permit them to create a voice. The money also includes more than 10 million to “increase mental health supports” for Aborigines during the referendum period. Typical Labor hypocrisy. They’ve halved the mental health support for everyone else at a time when nearly all Australians are struggling with the legacy of pandemic lockdowns, the cost of living and the housing crisis. Now there’s the $25K bonus for finishes. Let’s say there are about 550 fights a year and every one of them ends in a finish. That’s around $14 million. So that’s roughly $31 million that we’re all going crazy about. Reminder: they’re getting $1.1 billion from Paramount+ alone. That doesn’t include their deals with all the other broadcasters around the world. It also doesn’t include the litany of sponsors on the cage. It’s absurd that we get so hung up on this. It was nice to see, but it’s not that far off from what they were doing 12 or so years ago.
