The fact is, since Mike Bloomberg left office in 2013, New York City’s budget has increased by $40 billion, a 50% increase, on top of New York State increasing its spending by over $100 billion. New York City now spends more than the entire state of Florida, despite Florida having about 23 million residents and NYC just over 8 million. And Zohran Mamdani is set to worsen the city’s fiscal situation by demanding that Kathy Hochul and the state legislature raise taxes by $9 billion, or else he will increase city property taxes by 9.5%, the highest in the country.

Mayor Mamdani announced today that he balanced the NYC budget by being bailed out by Gov. Hochul. Billions of dollars from New York State are now going to NYC instead of helping New Yorkers outside the failing city. Over the last decade, California, New York, and Illinois each lost roughly a million people, while Florida, Texas, and Tennessee gained nearly that many combined. Red states added jobs faster over the same period. $100 goes further in Tennessee than it does in New Jersey. California and New York have the highest tax rates in the country.
