But the first method looks a lot quicker and easier, not to mention the end result looked just as good as the other way...

lol model how you like, but the second way shown was the worse of the two.

either way you're just extruding along the silhouette, but the second way then has extra steps on top. the only advantage the second has is it's easier to see the reference.

First method for cylindrical contour is way faster and cleaner for vertice / face count. When I do, I typically make models in sections so they can be animated and manipulated easier. The second method might have a seam at the back due to the mesh not being fully connected.
