Around the Great Lakes, Indigenous communities mined nearly pure copper and transformed it into tools, weapons and ornaments. Thousands of ancient mining pits remain. One older estimate suggests that up to 1.5 billion pounds of copper ore was extracted across the Archaic period, although the true figure is unknown. Then, after thousands of years, practical copper-tool production declined. Technology does not always move in a straight line.
