Another good one is yelling to a pitcher to throw strikes.

You get a follow for this

Their head isn't supposed to stay still!!! Their head should turn to follow the ball as the ball moves closer to them and through the zone. At the point where the bat meets the ball their head should be turned now where they are looking directly at the contact point.

Missing the forrest for the trees. You’re probably right, but if a kids head moves so much they can’t track anything, first thing to do is get it so their eyes stay relatively still. Yelling “keep your eye on the ball” won’t help.

Teach ball tracking instead of "head stillness". You can still make a game of it. And while I agree with your idea of "having fun with mom or dad" is the key....you can actually do both...have fun and teach them something useful for when they are practicing and playing.

Yes it’s the yelling that’s distracting. Nailed it.

That's definitely a helpful drill. The problem I see in coach pitch/machine pitch is that these kids really aren't watching the ball hit the bat. They're so desperate for feedback that they are looking for you as the parent or coach to react before the ball reaches the plate.

This is so great for youngsters. Watching the bobbleheads out there is fun, but watching them hit is better.

This kind of teaching is (a) SO good; (b) SO helpful; (c) SO easy for a kid to apply, compared to (for example) "Keep your head still." My dad used to teach golf with drills and mental images like this, and he was a great, great teacher/coach. Keep it up @coachwheel

How do I get the Aztec hat with the red front?! As an Aztec living in Seattle it’s so hard to get good merch.

Wouldn’t you say hat falling off over home plate is the correct posture to be in?

For a kid who misses 5 in a row I’m not sure we need to get that detailed.

I teach the kids I coach that your chin should go from front shoulder to back shoulder. As your shoulders turn one way, your chin (& head)should turn the other way. When you finish your swing your chin should be touching the opposite shoulder than you started with.

the best thing you can do for your little guys & gals is seriously chirp at the other team. Bonus points if you start a fisticuff or make kids cry
