FACT Ireland experiences some of the strongest recorded wind gusts in Europe. In December 2011, during Storm Friedhelm, a gust of 159 km/h (99 mph) was recorded at Malin Head, Ireland’s northernmost point. The storm was part of a powerful cyclonic system known as a "weather bomb", common in the North Atlantic. Ireland’s position on the edge of the Atlantic makes it a frequent target for such intense weather systems, especially in winter.
