Not strange. I remember it. Before widespread use of the Internet, the story surfaced that he was ill on the trip and then the video emerged and more details.

Anyone over 40 remembers this and SNL and late night comedians made jokes about it until Bush Sr. left office.

After collapsing, he walked to his private car as he left in the middle of the dinner. The following day, the morning edition of The Asahi Shimbun reported on its front page, “President Bush collapsed and left the dinner.” It was big news primarily because it was a presidential election year in the United States. According to a top-secret official telegram conveying the exchange, Bush said he did not remember fainting at all. The last thing he remembered was seeing a beautiful light and feeling like he was in a quiet heaven, Bush said.

I remember this. I think they blamed it on the sushi.

1992 was an interesting year! Here are some strange and notable news stories from that year: 1. Frozen caveman found in glacier (October 1992): Ötzi, a 5,300-year-old mummified body, was discovered in the Alps. 1. "Black Wednesday" financial crisis (September 1992): Britain withdrew from the European Exchange Rate Mechanism, causing economic turmoil. 1. Yugoslavian conflict escalates (1992): Civil war broke out, leading to widespread devastation and ethnic cleansing. 1. Rodney King beating and LA riots (March-April 1992): Police brutality sparked widespread protests and violence. 1. Sinéad O'Connor tears up Pope's picture on SNL (October 1992): The singer protested child abuse in the Catholic Church. 1. The "Great Garbage Patch" discovered (1992): Researcher Charles Moore identified vast oceanic plastic waste. 1. First text message sent (December 1992): "Merry Christmas" was sent via SMS. 1. Mall of America opens (August 1992): One of the largest shopping centers in the US debuted. 1. Winter Storm "Storm of the Century" (March 1992): Severe weather battered Eastern North America. 1. Euro Disney opens (April 1992): Now Disneyland Paris.

While attending a banquet hosted by Japanese prime minister Kiichi Miyazawa on January 8, 1992, American president George H. W. Bush fainted after vomiting onto Miyazawa's pants at around 20.20 JST. Doctors later attributed the incident to a case of acute gastroenteritis. Bush visited Tokyo to attend the Japan-U.S. summit in early January 1992. The U.S. president was 67 years old at the time.

WTH....it was lead story on news. The late night hosts all made fun of it.

How could the narrator missed it? The media mocked Bush incessantly over this incident. I remember being amazed that they showed so little concern for his health and just wanted to make him look bad to benefit Clinton.

Weird

Damn that stoppage of the news at the end is crazy, pretty sure they have few seconds delay now so that doesn’t happen.
