Defender was created by Eugene Jarvis (inspired by Asteroids and Space Invaders). He also made Robotron: 2084 a few years later. Both were highly praised and massive commercial hits. Defender alone grossed over 1 billion US$ and remains one of the highest selling arcades of all time. I can confirm that Defender definitely ate too much of my pocket money...
