In an air war, the targets at the top of the list are usually missile defense sites, radar arrays, or any other targets which might be more important to take out first. Tulum Peyniri is a very unusual type of cheese that is gaining popularity in the culinary world. It is a traditional cheese that has been produced for centuries in Turkey. This unique cheese has a distinctive flavour and texture that has been enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. Tulum Peyniri originated in Turkey, specifically in the province of Erzincan. It is believed that the cheese has been produced in this region for over a thousand years. Locals use either cow, goat or sheep milk to make this cheese and age it in goat skin bags called tulum. Actually, this Turkish cheese has a rich history that dates back to the Ottoman Empire. It was a popular cheese among the Ottoman aristocracy and was often served at royal banquets. Over time, the cheese became more widely available and was enjoyed by people from all walks of life. Presently, Tulum Peyniri is primarily produced in the province of Erzincan, which is located in eastern Turkey. It is then pressed and allowed to drain for a further 10 days. And this is when the magic begins. The formed young cheese is moved into a goat skin that has been specially cleaned and treated. It is pressed into the skin, filling it compactly. And the opening of the skin is then sewn shut. Maturation takes place at high altitudes and humidity. And can last for up to three months. At this age, Tulum develops a beautiful crumbly texture and a delicious complex flavour. Tulum Peyniri has a sharp, tangy flavour that is similar to Feta. However, it has a crumbly texture and is quite dry compared to other types of cheese. Moreover, this cheese has a strong aroma that is earthy and slightly sour. Undoubtedly, this is a very versatile cheese that pairs well with many different foods. Locals often serve it as part of a meze platter alongside olives, tomatoes and other Mediterranean-style dishes. Tulum excels as a table cheese but can also be used in cooking. Some great recipes showcasing this cheese include börek, pides and pesto sauce. Crow’s ability to sneaky release and ability to control sets him up to one day be able to fill out a rotation or be a long reliever. Crow was a 28th rounder in the 2019 draft, but was paid an approximately 5th round slot bonus that the Angels dumped on him. With the 2020 season lost to COVID, Crow debuted in 2020 getting his feet wet at Single A and the Arizona Fall League. He followed that up with a strong 2022 performance in AA Rocket City and continued there to start 2023, prior to an elbow injury. In AA, he had a low 4’s ERA, as noted above. Averaging over a strikeout per inning, he averaged just over two walks per game. Opponents hit Crow with about a .240 opponent batting average, leading to a 1.204 WHIP. Nearly 50% of contact induced was a ground ball with under 20% being line drives. So far in his career, Crow has done a good job eluding hard contact. Crow throws a fastball that sits low-90’s with a flat approach that fools hitters in the top of the zone. His curve sits below 80-mph and posted elite spin and movement in AA (notably with a tacked ball). The curve has vertical dive, but more importantly elite horizontal sweep across the plate. He throws a faster, mid-80’s slider that also has nearly a foot of sweep. His fourth, and sparsely used, offering is a change-up that tails arm side. Crow throws a strike nearly three quarters of his offerings with solid command, which allows him to miss barrels. Shut down from an inflamed elbow since April ‘23, he underwent Tommy John surgery in summer of 2023. His return from Tommy John will be worth a watch. Hopefully he maintains his command and progress made to this point in his career so that he can resume his career path. The driver, who was driving for Raj Transport, had to be forcibly removed from the truck's cab at gunpoint by police. There is also a bit of confusion regarding this case, as multiple individuals have been arrested under similar circumstances, with nearly the same name, over the past few weeks. Two weeks ago, another Indian driver was arrested in the same area. The driver's booking details revealed his name to be Harvinder Singh, not to be confused with the Harjinder Singh who caused the deaths of three people in Florida two weeks ago. In this case, the Arkansas Singh was highly intoxicated at the time of his arrest, with a BAC of 0.15%. So far, the wrong-way driver from yesterday has not been identified. As a brief summary, the following is a description of recent events which may be confusing due to the similarity of the names of those involved, and the circumstances of each incident: Harjinder Singh: Arrested on August 18th in California after causing the deaths of three on the Florida Turnpike. Harneet Singh: Passenger in Harjinder Singh's truck (and also his brother). Arrested on August 21st by ICE for being in the US illegally. Navjeet Singh: Arrested in Canada on August 22nd, after remaining a fugitive almost 9 months after causing a fatal crash in Manitoba. Harvinder Singh: Arrested on August 14th on I-40 near West Memphis for drunk driving. Unknown Raj Transport Driver: Arrested on August 26th after driving the wrong way on the Interstate 55 Bridge near West Memphis. Minnesota: Two mass shootings have been reported in Minneapolis over the past 24 hours. Yesterday a drive-by shooting was reported in the vicinity of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School on 4th Avenue. 1x person was killed and 6x others wounded during the attack. The suspect has not been identified and remains at large. This morning, a separate mass shooting was reported at the Annunciation Church on W 54th Street. One gunman targeted the Church during the all-school morning Mass for the Catholic School co-located with the Church. Local authorities report a total of 2x children killed, and 17x others wounded during the engagement. The suspect has been identified as Robin Westman (formerly Robert Westman), who was reported deceased at the scene. -----END TEARLINE----- Analyst Comments: At the moment, all evidence points to this Church shooting not being a random act, but a deliberate and targeted act of terrorism. A manifesto created by the murderer was posted online shortly before the attack, which (along with other content) confirms the shooter was a mentally ill transgender man who attacked his old Church. It is usually best to wait a few days for information to settle down after a major shooting. However in this case it is important to be aware that while the crime scene was still active, gun control activists were observed demonstrating at the scene, harassing parents who were trying to pick up their children from the school after the shooting. Horrific murder scenes are already a nightmare to manage...staging areas have to be established for reuniting families, media has to be kept from contaminating the crime scene, and further security concerns must be considered as well (just in case of secondary attacks). Any time a mass shooting like this occurs, it takes great skill to (on the fly) manage the scene effectively and efficiently, while also maintaining a respectful and considerate response. However, when activists begin harassing grieving parents, a powder keg emerges and there's no telling what might happen. This was made worse by Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey making statements that many have perceived to be in poor taste (at best), or blasphemous (at worst). Even the shooter's mother had to find out that her son was the shooter from journalists who called their home phone number to harass them. Consequently, in this highly-emotionally-charged environment, the response so far has largely been to throw gasoline on the fire to make people as angry as possible, further increasing tensions in an already tough situation. The media coverage of this attack being even more appalling than normal hasn't improved the situation either. 🚨Relief effort update - yes it is a long post, but please read. I want to start off by explaining how strong the Appalachia people are, because the scale of devastation is truly bizarre. We have had team members on the ground reach some of the most rural places that havent seen a single "agency" since this has all happened. Our crews have reached people whose homes no longer exist, who have lost loved ones and who have nothing but the clothes on their backs, people completely cut off from the outside world. That being said, the common theme through every one of these interactions, is that the citizens who live in these communities still have their heads held high and have rolled up their sleeves and begun the process of trying to clean the FEET thick layer of mud covering everything to see what is even left to salvage. These people are "mountain tough" and their resolve is unbreakable, but they need our help, AS A COUNTRY. One of our forward crew member on the ground, providing updates on road conditions into towns that are cut off and need help, has hiked into several places that have been neglected. The pictures i include in this post are of the area in and surrounding the Green Mountain area. The level of destruction depicted in the photos and videos do not do the scope of the damage justice, but you can tell from the imagery, that this situation is not only challenging, but dire. Critical infrastructure is completely decimated in most of these places and will take months if not longer to repair or rebuild. We have coordinated a group of Doctors that will be bringing life saving medical supplies, well above and beyond basic first aid needs. They will be traveling by helicopter to areas that are inaccessible by vehicle to give that life saving aid. We have been able to get supplies into the remote town of Marshall, where their homes have been either damaged by the flood waters to the point of being unlivable or just completely deleted from the earth. Talking with these people, they have concerns for the future, and not just the coming days or weeks, but in the near future as winter creeps into the area. As that happens, the challenges they are presented with become exponentially more difficult and so much more dire. From the difficulty of building temporary housing to the logistics and availability of supplies to rebuild, the geographical location of this devastation is creating more problems to overcome than what most would associate with "hurricane damage". As the country descends on Asheville, supplies and help has become bountiful there and our operations will begin to shift further into the mountains to help those that have not had help. Supply needs are changing rapidly, and as they do we are having to pivot on what we are procuring to bring into the affected areas. I call on the people of this country to help us help these people. They have been largely neglected and are deserving of our compassion and help in any way that we can deliver it. I can't speak for the government and what they are or aren't doing, but i can speak for our efforts. We are just everyday citizens, husbands, wives, sons and daughters, standing together to help those in need. We will not stop, until our mission is complete.

By and large, the Israel Air Force (IAF) possesses the range and capabilities necessary to neutralize the IRGC-AF’s heavily fortified offensive missile infrastructure. This needn’t rely on GB 57 MOPs or similarly massive deep penetration munitions, but can primarily be achieved through precision strikes targeting tunnel entrances and launch openings, effectively rendering these sites temporarily unusable, provided pinpoint intelligence of the target sites is both accurate and sufficiently comprehensive. Logistically, sustaining 24-hour long-range sortie operations against IRGC-AF’s missile infrastructure depends on highly-coordinated logistics and a carefully executed refueling chain. Two Boeing 707 tankers in a single wave can supply over 180,000 kilograms of fuel (with 90,000 kilograms transferable fuel capacity each). An F-35 requires approximately 8,300 kilograms for a full tank. The combat radius of the IAF’s F-35I “Adir” which shares the performance characteristics of the F-35A Lightning II, is approximately 1,075 kilometers for an operational range exceeding 2,000 kilometers. The distance from the Negev, through the Golan, Syria, and southern Iraq is roughly half this distance (about 1,200-1,400 kilometers) depending on the operation’s design). So a single refuel at the push point near the border of western Iran furnishes the F-35I with a fresh combat radius of 1,075 kilometers enabling it to strike deep into Iranian territory. Each strike package, potentially comprising 10-12 F-35Is, equipped with internal dual-weapon bays with payload capacities of 1,850 kg (4,000 lbs), and can therefore engage 10-12 targets per wave, assuming both weapons are deployed per target and depending on the complexity of the strike sites and the tactical requirements of the mission. Advanced standoff weapons like the Popeye, Rampage, or Delilah, with ranges of 400-600 kilometers, permit the IAF to strike targets up to 1,300-1,500 kilometers inside Iran without overextending its aerial refueling chain. Although air defense systems such as the Russian-made S-300, the enhanced Chinese HQ-9, and potentially domestic systems like the Bavar-373 possess ranges of 200 kilometers or more, 300 kilometers or more safe-distance for critical high-value strategic assets like the IAF’s Desert Giants refueling platforms will affect the F-35I’s strike range, as always depending on operational design. The IAF possesses heavily modified F-15 Ra’am and F-16 Sufa for combat air patrol (CAP or “Yis’ar”) and suppression of air defense (SEAD or “Chihan”) missions to protect strategic assets like its refueling chain, and to disrupt and destroy air and ground defense systems. SEAD platforms and wild weasels may comprise 10-20 fighters of each sortie package depending on targeting and operational design. Israel’s approach would require a multi-layered defense penetration strategy leveraging both kinetic and non-kinetic SEAD tactics, such as electronic warfare and cyber operations, pivotal for disrupting IRGC-AF missile guidance systems and command and control networks before and during initial air strikes. Electronic attack platforms like the AGM-88 High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missiles (HARM) that can jam or spoof Iranian radars and communication system can shape the theater, providing a safer corridor for kinetic strike packages. Advanced standoff weapons, such as the AGM-142 Have Nap “Popeye” enhanced with an imaging infrared seeker to enhance its accuracy against high-value targets, the Delilah cruise missile designed for suppression of enemy air defenses (SEAD) and precision strike missions, and the Rampage, a supersonic, long-range, air-to-ground assault missile suited to overcome air defense systems with its speed and low radar cross-section and designed to strike high-value, well-protected targets with precision—all of which can be launched from significant stand-off distances. The IAF also employs state-of-the-art intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and electronic warfare (EW) platforms like the Gulfstream 550 Shavit and Nachshon aircraft, as well as locally produced Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) ISR UAVs called the Eitans. These UAVs, which can operate continuously for 36 hours and are equipped with advanced signals intelligence (SIGINT) systems, provide critical real-time intelligence during operations. Each of these strategic assets require CAPs, so each sortie package may assign elements of 2 or more F-16s or F-15s for each aerial asset: EW, ISR, UAV and refueling aircraft, for a total of 10-20 fighter jets in air patrol missions depending on design. The CAPs elements’ size and weaponeering will depend on how heavily contested the airspace, that the IAF anticipates operating in, will be. Robust protection for these strategic assets is an integral component in the design and planning of such a mission, including the IAF’s logistics chain. Operationally, with a publicly disclosed total of 7 refueling 707s in the IAF’s Desert Giants Sqn 120, it can deploy 6 tanker packages of 2 707s in order to execute three waves of airstrikes four times per day, with an estimated average of six-hour intervals between each takeoff. Roughly speaking this breaks down to 90 minutes from base to near-border push point (ferry leg), 90 minutes of combat operations time including return to egress point (on-stage leg), 90 minutes RTB (return to base) including refueling assets en route, and 90 minutes refuel, maintain and rearm for the entire sortie package (reconstitution phase) at base. This equates to twelve strike packages delivered approximately every 2 hours around the clock for a virtually continuous presence at the push point, covering Imam Ali, Arak, Kermanshah, Isfahan and many other critical sites within Iranian territory. The F-15I Ra’am is highly modular in its fuel design possessing a combat radius of approximately 1,600 kilometers, and a much greater ferry range which can be extended through a menu of external and detachable fuel tanks, making it one of the most versatile long-range platforms in the IAF’s aviation fleet. Given its primary assignments in CAP and SEAD operations it can theoretically conduct the entire mission without any refueling or only partial refueling. Likewise the IAF’s heavily modified F-16I Sufa is equipped with conformal fuel tanks that can extend its range, increasing its fuel capacity compared to the baseline F-16 model by up to 7,700 kilos (17,000 lbs) of external fuel, contributing to an operational range of about 3,220 km (2,000 miles). Therefore, it too adds limited burden to the IAF’s refueling logistics. Assuming 7 minute refueling time for each IAF F-35I, two tankers can refuel 10-12 F-35I strike packages in 35-40 minutes en route to push point and again en route to base from rendezvous point post-on-stage. No additional time is required for these refueling operations as they may be seamlessly integrated into the ferry and RTB legs of the mission. Altogether, the IAF can hit somewhere in the ball park of 120-130 sites a day, severely damaging the IRGC-AF’s defensive and offensive capabilities within 72 hours. After three days, the IAF could theoretically strike about 450 sites. For heavily fortified targets with deep burial depths, requiring deeper penetration, the GB 31 (A2K) with BLU 137/B deep penetration warheads are suitable for the F-35Is and the GBU 72 (A5K) with BLU 138 deep penetration warheads can be deployed by the F-15I Ra’ams once sufficient SEAD ops are completed and closer to the borders of western Iran. Weaponeering, shuffling assets to suit allocation needs, and the overall designing of sortie package inventories, including formulating the necessary logistics, is an immensely complex challenge managed by highly trained personnel and assisted by advanced systems in what can only be likened to a dark opera of destructive power. Whatever the challenges, one thing remains certain. Israel always finds a way to defy gravity, alter realities on the ground (and in the air) and take the region by storm. As long as the IRGC-AF maintains its offensive missile capabilities it is liable to heavily target Israel’s airbases, critical military installations and civilian centers. Therefore, before Israel considers oil, nuclear, or any other strategic assets, it will need to knock the front teeth out this snake when it strikes. Israel might front-load its first strike to meet these objectives, coordinating all 3 waves in rapid succession shaped by Jericho II and III strikes tightly preceded by cyber, electronic warfare and internal sabotage operations. The IAF’s first strike will likely be designed to leave the IRGC-AF reeling and off-balance long enough for its fleet to reconstitute and launch the next set of waves. These are likely to then settle into a steady pace for at least 72 hours given the volume, geographic and strategic depth of their missile program. This follows a few weeks of election issues after the President disqualified his political opponent from the election. Analyst Comment: The fall of Guinea-Bissau is the latest addition to what has been colloquially referred to as the "coup belt", a line of nations stretching east-west across Africa, which have been host to overthrowing their governments over the past five years. Hong Kong: Yesterday a multiple-alarm fire broke out at a series of high-rise apartment buildings that were undergoing renovation in Tai Po. Around one thousand firefighters, medical, and police officers worked to extinguished the fires, which involved 7 of the 8 skyscrapers that comprise the Wang Fuk Court housing project. Concerning casualties, 65x fatalities are confirmed so far, however potentially hundreds of people remain missing as this complex provided housing for roughly 4,000 people. A few hours after the fire broke out, three people who worked for the construction company conducting repairs on the buildings were arrested on suspicion of arson. Analyst Comment: Although several people were arrested, it's not clear as to if this was a deliberate attack or a preventable accident. Right now, locals suspect criminal negligence: the contractor is said to have cut corners during the renovation project, by using highly flammable netting and foam insulation during construction. If this is really what happened, this would explain the rapid spread of the fire to seven different structures. An investigation will be needed to confirm the origin and explain the rapid spread of the fire, but right now this incident bears striking resemblance to the Grenfell Tower fire, which rapidly consumed the London apartment building in a similar manner back in 2017. That incident occurred in nearly the same manner, with highly flammable foam insulation being used to insulate the structure, which caught fire and allowed the flames to spread rapidly. -HomeFront- Washington D.C. - The suspect in yesterday's shooting has been identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a former Afghan soldier who worked with the United States as part of the Afghan intelligence services during the Global War on Terrorism. Ramanullah was granted entry to the United States in 2021 under Operation ALLIES WELCOME, the program to evacuate Afghans who worked with the US government during the occupation. Regarding the attack itself, more details have come to light which help explain how the attack was carried out. Rahmanullah approached the two soldiers with a revolver, shooting one in the head immediately and severely wounding the other. This took both soldiers out of the fight immediately, as neither had time to react. By happenstance, one of their officers (a Major) was walking on foot in their vicinity, conducting an informal spot check of the various security posts set up in the area. This Major was not armed with a service weapon, but was the primary responder at the time of the attack. After the two soldiers were engaged, the Major took up a position of cover and concealment near the shooter. When the shooter stopped firing and began reloading, the Major attacked the shooter with a personally owned pocket knife, stabbing the attacker in the head and torso. As this hand-to-hand engagement was occurring, another armed soldier arrived and engaged the attacker with his firearm, striking the suspect several times in the extremities. From there, a dogpile situation occurred and the attacker was detained. Analyst Comment: Though details will certainly be clarified in due time, at present this appears to be a classic case of everyone doing everything right, and tragedy still being the result. Both soldiers were armed and wearing body armor at the time, however the speed and extremely close range of the attack rendered these tools ineffective. Prayers are strongly encouraged all around for their recovery. -----END TEARLINE----- Analyst Comments: The shooting in Washington also highlights the importance of having fast *and* accurate information during a crisis. Immediately after the shooting, one photo of the suspect being loaded into an ambulance began circulating online. However, some people took this photo and ran it through AI models to clean up the image, as a shaky photo taken with a smartphone from a long distance doesn't usually offer the best image quality. The problem is that the AI models significantly altered the face of the suspect. In short, someone tried to clean up the image with AI, but in doing so, the face of the suspect was slightly altered and no longer looked like him. The effect was subtle, but enough to actually change what the man looked like. This photo spread like wildfire, with everyone craving the higher-resolution photo of the suspect, despite this AI-manipulated photo not actually being accurate. At the height of a terror attack, the primary photo of the suspect that circulated social media...was an AI photoshop job. In most cases, the fact that this image was AI "enhanced" was NOT disclosed...people had no idea they were looking at (and sharing) a manipulated photo. As if this wasn't serious enough, a second wave of AI-manipulated photos hit the timeline shortly after the suspect was identified. The actual photo of the suspect as leaked on social media was a cellphone photo of a computer screen, and not the best quality. So, some journalists took it upon themselves to manipulate yet another photo of the suspect, which once again changed details of the suspect's face. In this case, the AI-model was a little more accurate, and did a better job of cleaning up a poor-quality image, but the concerns still stand...no one disclosed that this image was generated by AI, and based on a different photo. Sometimes, we have to be content with the information that we have at the time of a crisis. Not everything can be in 4k ultra-high resolution, and right now all AI models have shown weaknesses in producing false information at times. This would be very wise to consider as this situation is very likely to happen again; some fugitive wanted by police might only have one or two blurry photos to share with the media. And if the media decide to alter the photos themselves, changing the physical features of the suspect, the public will be on the lookout for the wrong man. During the heat of the moment, the fast-paced nature of an emergency might result in the internet not realizing that AI-models are being used by people who are not disclosing it. During a crisis, photos of suspects are often released very quickly, especially if there are continued threats. These photos are usually never high resolution or perfect quality, but due to the speed at which the public must be aware of something, authorities share what information they have at the time. If journalists are going to start taking the photos given to them by the police, and running those photos through AI models before publishing them to the public...this is a major problem. This has been a concern for some time, however now the proof is in the pudding. In effect, this was a test that most people on the internet failed. It is not just theoretically possible for inaccurate and manipulative AI-generated content to slip in during a real-time disaster...this case proves that it already happened, and very few people noticed. If we recall, this exact same situation has already happened as well. In the hours after the Charlie Kirk shooting, for example, AI-manipulated renderings of the suspect circulated more widely than the official photos as released by the FBI. In that case, a wanted fugitive was actively being sought, and the fake photos of the suspect circulated more widely than the official photos. People want pretty pictures, but this is almost never the reality of emergencies that are in progress. Nevertheless, the nature of engagement farming on social media often impacts the situation, as AI-created content is often more desirable than the truth. As such, when it comes to future emergencies, one of the major concerns will now be imagery of a suspect or a crime scene, which may be heavily manipulated by AI. This is another relatively well known USAAF B-17 interception by a Luftwaffe fighter that is worth looking at in some detail. There are no archival descriptions that I can find identifying personnel, date or location involved but much can be gleaned from the footage itself. The bomber being targeted lacks the chin turret that was specifically installed on the G model of the B-17 to counter this sort of frontal attack, identifying it as an F model. Tracers from the attacking aircraft come from both sides of the frame suggesting that the gun camera is mounted in the nose of a twin-engined aircraft, such as a Messerschmitt Bf 110 or Me 410 It is often speculated that the Luftwaffe fighter here is attacking through its own flak but it is more likely that the explosions visible are the result of the Werfer-Granate 21 rocket launcher being employed. Flak bursts usually had a distinctive shape and ground fire would typically cease when friendly fighters were attacking. The rockets were set to detonate after traveling a fixed distance of around 600 meters and while the chances of scoring a direct hit were low, their 40 kg blast-fragmentation warheads were effective in breaking up the "combat box" formation and therefore making individual bombers more vulnerable to attack. In this case however, it appears the attacking aircraft have misjudged their timing and the rockets are detonating behind the formation. This was one of the disadvantages of attacking frontally as approach speeds made targeting more of a challenge, however it was also a way of avoiding the majority of the bomber's defensive firepower. Another consideration often ignored is the effect that a head-on attack would have on projectile effectiveness. At full speed a B-17 would be traveling at around 125 meters per second, if it had to simply fly into a stationary 20mm armor piercing shell weighing 115 grams the impact energy would be 900 joules. This is significantly greater than most .45 ACP pistol rounds fired at point blank range, only from the motion of the aircraft. The speed of the attacking aircraft at the moment the projectile is fired can also be added to the muzzle velocity making for an even more devastating impact. This was of course a double-edged sword as it meant defensive fire would be similarly more effective on the attacking aircraft, and it also gave the pilot a smaller time window during which he could fire and a more complex firing solution to calculate, not to mention the increased risk of a mid-air collision. As a general rule, Luftwaffe pilots were instructed not to waste time setting up an attack from a particular angle, rather they should attack the bomber formation from whatever position it would be encountered. In this particular incident, most of the impacts are around the number 3 and 4 engines on the B-17. While air-cooled radials were more damage-resistant than liquid-cooled engines, from this angle they would not have been protected by the aircraft structure. While there is no immediate fire visible, it's likely they would both have been put out of action. Armor piercing shells would typically represent around a third of the ammunition loadout and for the MG 151/20 cannon such projectiles could penetrate almost an inch of armor at 100 meters, therefore punching through a cylinder or crankcase would not be an issue. There is also one particular projectile that appears to strike the cockpit followed by an explosion near the horizontal tail. It almost seems like a shell entered the windshield then detonated inside, however I believe this is an optical illusion and they are in fact two separate impacts. The damage inflicted would likely have prevented the bomber from returning to base although there is nothing in the clip that would allow the aircraft to be identified. One interesting detail is that other Flying Fortresses in the formation appear to be fitted with chin turrets which would date the footage to between late 1943 to early 1944.

How to quickly deter China from invading Taiwan — my interview with Ethan Thornton of Mach Industries Ethan is one of the brightest, most thoughtful people I've ever met. I believe his ideas on defending the US, including our interests in Taiwan, are urgently needed. Summary 👇 The US would likely lose a military conflict with China in Taiwan and other crucial areas in the Pacific—even though we spend far more money than China does. • We face a vastly underrated economic threat (not to mention human rights) if we cannot deter China from seizing Taiwan. • China has published plans to have military readiness for a Taiwan invasion by 2027. • We depend on Taiwan for almost all high-performance semi-conductors, which are at the base of all modern industry. • Taiwan had made clear as a deterrent that it’s prepared to destroy its semiconductor facilities in the event of an invasion, but China’s increasing semiconductor manufacturing makes the threat worse for the US than China. • It’s now an open secret that the US loses most or all of its wargames in a conflict with China over Taiwan, Japan, or South Korea. • How our Navy loses to China: If we can get our ships to the Pacific, we’ll quickly run out of ammo, but the more likely scenario is that our ships—including aircraft carriers—mostly don’t get there thanks to unmanned systems and hypersonics. • How our Air Force loses to China: The Air Force has limited planes and even more limited munitions, but the increasingly bigger problem is the planes won’t take off thanks to China’s hypersonic missiles and other unmanned systems that can destroy available runways in the Pacific. • How our Army loses to China: The Army is still planning to rely on tanks, rifles, and the fighting styles of the 2010s, even though Ukraine has shown ground wars depend on drones and other mobile, decentralized, difficult-to-target assets. Example: Ukraine is actually refusing to bring gifted M1 Abrams tanks to the front line as they would be quickly destroyed by drones. • The US’s failure to have an unequivocally superior military to China is not a funding issue, given that the US spends some 3 times on defense what China does. It’s an issue of how money is spent. US weapons procurement has been fundamentally stagnant for 30 years while war has rapidly evolved based on unmanned systems. • The US’s extreme military vulnerability to China is due to us mostly spending money on the wrong things given how war has evolved. We’re still basically procuring the same weapons we were 30 years ago. • The most important evolution in warfighting is unmanned systems, which are powerful but cheap and thus scalable and decentralizable. • Large numbers of unmanned weapons distributed widely make large, expensive, centralized assets increasingly vulnerable (non-survivable). • Large numbers of unmanned weapons distributed widely are hard to counter since just some of them need to survive in order to inflict huge damage. • Yet our trillion-dollar defense budget is largely spent on manned systems that are very unlikely to survive a real conflict. • Even insofar as the US is procuring unmanned systems, its rate of evolution is way too slow. Unmanned systems evolve like consumer electronics, yet we have long procurement cycles (more than 5 times slower than China’s). To address the China threat we need to take advantage of our innovativeness to create stockpile of superior, strategic unmanned weapons systems that will deter them. • We cannot win a protracted war against China, given their superiority in manufacturing, and we don’t want such a war. But we can and want to deter them from attacking Taiwan, which controls the high-performance semiconductors our economy depends on. • Our big advantage is over China that we are better at innovating than China due to our political system and culture. They can make things at much larger scales, but we are much better at inventing new things. • The US’s superior innovation ability means that we can make superior weapons with huge cost-performance asymmetry compared to China’s. • These weapons need to be Strategic: can cripple China’s ability to wage war. (Ethan elaborates) • Given the time it takes to make weapons systems and the speed at which wars now start and end, we need to create a large stockpile of unmanned weapons systems—think tends of thousands—to deter China. If government procures weapons using standards of cost-effectiveness this can be done very cheaply. Government weapons spending must move as quickly as possible toward the standards of cost-effectiveness, scalability, and survivability. • Big picture, US weapons spending and procurement needs explicit standards to decide what to invest in. • Fundamentally the standard of weapons procurement must be cost-effectiveness: How much does it cost to have a given amount of effect in the expected environment? • Part of cost-effectiveness is scalability: We need to be able to produce sufficient units now and in an ongoing conflict. • Part of cost-effectiveness is survivability: Our weapons systems need to be able to by pass or handle enemy interference, which most legacy systems can’t. • If government can start allocating even $10 billion by these standards we can afford to build the stockpile superior unmanned weapons systems that will deter China from invading Taiwan.
