The Tripods (1984-85). A BBC/Seven Network adaptation of John Christopher's YA novels of the same name. Will, Henry and Beanpole flee the tyranny of the Masters and their Tripod machines. There's a lot of charm to this, it's an earnest series and the story itself is fascinating. Earth is enslaved by the alien Masters, thrown back to a pastoral medieval existence, with people 'capped' by implants to make them docile. The Tripods - three legged war machines - stride across the land enforcing the Master's will. How does a rural population fight back against technology? It's fondly remembered by many and was a reasonably big-budget affair. It is a slow story though and can be plodding in parts, but it stays true to its young adult storytelling and is very strong on world building. Only the first two of Christopher's novels were adapted. Less than stellar ratings led the BBC to end the show after series two. Disney now hold the rights to The Tripods, but there are no signs they plan to do anything with it.
