It was very good to be in the House of Lords yesterday to participate in the debate on funding of hospices, and listen to expert perspectives. Palliative and end of life care services provide essential and high-quality care, and it is vital that they are resourced sufficiently to continue to do so. This must be our immediate action before we even consider a change in the law on assisted suicide.

‼️SHOCKING! Sandesh Gulhane MSP states that it’s not up to Parliament to tell people "no" regarding assisted suicide. This is nonsense. Parliament should protect vulnerable people and those in the depths of despair from assisted suicide. Sometimes this means saying "no".

Naz Shah MP (Naz Shah MP): "We have to use the word 'suicide' because we are amending the Suicide Act." Of course, she is absolutely correct. The Bill proposes to provide state assistance in suicide for those who are thought to be within 6 months of the end of their life, so assisted dying’ is simply a euphemism for ‘assisted suicide’.

It is not compassionate to encourage, promote, or celebrate people killing themselves. Assisted suicide (doctors provide the means) and euthanasia (doctors directly murder) are wrong. If people we love are sick, we should offer compassion and seek palliative care to help alleviate suffering and enhance their quality of life, not kill them.
