#WATCH | Delhi | On Supreme Court directing the Central Government to develop a legal framework for domestic workers, Advocate Chandrika Prasad Mishra says, "Today, the Supreme Court of India's bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan has passed a landmark judgment. They have specifically made recommendations and directed the Union Government of India, the Ministry of Law and Justice and the Ministry of Labour to frame guidelines for the protection of domestic workers. In this case, the complainant had filed a complaint to the police that her agency was not paying her a minimum wage as prescribed by the government. There were some serious allegations of trafficking as well... The matter travelled from the trial court to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court finally quashed the petition (of trafficking). Justice Surya Kant explained in detail that there is no specific law in India which regulates and protects the interests of domestic workers... This judgment would be very significant for domestic workers especially those who belong to the SC, ST, OBC and EWS communities..."

NALSAR students opposed the reported invitation to #Chief Justice of India #Surya Kant as chief guest at their convocation, following concerns over his reported remarks during a Supreme Court hearing. In response, the Bar Council of India directed State Bar Councils not to enrol #NALSAR’s 2026 law graduates until further orders. I opposes the BCI’s action, questioning the decision to penalise an entire graduating batch for the actions or views of some students. He argues that such collective action raises serious questions of fairness, proportionality and constitutionality, particularly when the professional future of an entire batch of young law graduates is affected.

#WATCH | Delhi: On the Supreme Court asking High Courts to decide contempt petitions over the alleged violation of bulldozer action guidelines, Advocate Anas Tanweer says, “After the bulldozer guidelines were issued, there were certain states that did not follow those guidelines… Today, the Supreme Court, taking into account that there could be questions of fact—and the Supreme Court will not go into questions of fact—has remanded those matters to the jurisdictional High Courts. It has given them the power to entertain it as contempt of this Court, as well as asked them to take help from the sessions judge or the district judge concerned in case of fact-finding. The grievance must be addressed in the High Courts first, and obviously, a Special Leave Petition (SLP) against their order can be filed before the Supreme Court if the state or the parties are not satisfied.”

SUPREME COMEDY In 2005, the Chief Information Commissioner asked the Supreme Court to declare the assets of its judges. The Supreme Court got angry. "We don't listen to orders. We give orders." The Supreme Court appealed to the Delhi High Court against the order of the Chief Information Commissioner. But the Delhi High Court said, "You have to release the information." So the Supreme Court appealed the decision of the Delhi High Court to a 2-judge bench of the Delhi High Court. The 2-judge bench of the Delhi High Court referred the matter back to the Supreme Court, saying this is your matter, you decide. Now the Supreme Court became the judge, jury and executioner in its own case. Cricket bookies would kill to have such a fixed match. A single-judge bench of the Supreme Court took up the matter and said a 3-judge bench should decide the case. The 3-judge bench of the Supreme Court sat on the case for 8 long years and arrived at a verdict - the matter should be looked at by a 5-judge bench of the Supreme Court. Finally in 2019, the 5-judge bench of the Supreme Court gave its verdict. It did not say that Supreme Court judges should declare their assets. It merely said the Supreme Court should release any information it had. So basically if a judge does not declare his assets, then there is nothing to declare. Comedy, yes. Funny, no.

We have been contacted by concerned students at University of Oxford after the Radcliffe Camera was reportedly scaled by members of the Oxford Action for Palestine Society. For over fifteen months, Jewish students have endured an atmosphere of hostility and exclusion, with little action taken to address their concerns. This unacceptable reality cannot continue.
